Did I just kill my PSX?
Went to plug in my PlayStation and it wont power up...and then realized I used wrong cable (figure 7 laptop cable instead of the one with the little square) now it wont power up even with correct cable. Ive had this psx since 96...did I just kill it?

That power cord should work. It probably didn't kill your system.
The first thing to check on a PSX that doesn't power up is the fuse on the power supply board. It's an easy fix if it's blown.

Agreed, it should make no difference - the PlayStation accepts straight AC from the wall because it has an internal power supply. The cables with the and without the square side are both just plain electrical cables with no active electronics. If it didn’t start it’s because the rounded one doesn’t fit in deep enough or there is some other issue unrelated to the power cable. It’s consoles that have an external power supply (brick or wallwart) that you must be careful with as they are expecting a low voltage and usually DC which means they would be damaged by high voltage AC (blowing an internal fuse at a minimum). Even if the cable you used was a strange one with a PSU, I highly highly doubt that connecting low voltage DC could damage hardware expecting high voltage AC - it just won’t run until you connect the appropriate cable.
The more important question - is your PlayStation from the same region you are using it in? Using a US or JP console in PAL countries without a step down converter would definitely fry something. When is the last time it was working properly? What exactly happens when you attempt to turn it on with the correct cable?

Worst case scenario is the primary side of the internal PSU frying. Best case is the fuse saving the primary side, requiring only a replacement.

In the few times I've had a similar issue, I don't remember the fuse blowing. Resign yourself to replacing the power supply; it's easy and cheap enough.

Yeah I oppened it up after it wouldn't power with the actual cable and saw the power supply is just attached by a ribbon cable. But its almost as cheap just to buy another psxldeveraux wrote:In the few times I've had a similar issue, I don't remember the fuse blowing. I'm in us it's the same psx ive had since 96 when I got it for my Bday. Yes I tried the correct plug (well my dreamcast plug) and it wont power though I hear some electric type noise. I had a cart in the parallel port could that somehow have fried it? Ive never had an issue before
