Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
Just received my Garo Lite. Tested it with my Gateway EV910A. I have my Gamecube outputting 480p.
I had a picture for a about 1 minute total so far. The monitor keeps saying its getting a signal of about 27-28khz? Anybody have this problem before?
EDIT: I'm using an interally modded gamecube 2.4b gcdual. It's outputting the Component signal via the multi out with a passthrough adapter and wii component cables.
This setup doesn't seem to work for my other LCD monitor that supports up to 1080p resolution.
EDIT2: Garo works with my Wii for Gamecube games. Outputs 640x480 according to my monitor. Is the garo not compatible with the 720x480 resolution of the GCDual?

Myself and others here have had many issues with the Garo and Garo Lite.
I'd highly recommend considering the RetroTINK COMP2RGB and just getting a SCART to VGA cable if your monitor doesn't require RGBHV and supports RGBS.

How much of a market is there for a COMP2RGB with a DE-15 output? (Would be nice if it had a switch for toggling RGBHV and RGBS.)Speedy wrote:Myself and others here have had many issues with the Garo and Garo Lite.

Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
I think that many VGA monitors can support RGBS signals so I don't think the market would be big enough to support another device, but I'm not sure. I know that Mike Chi already had mentioned that the COMP2RGB is a very niche device... so glad he made it though because it's miles better than anything else I've tried.

Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
Both my CRT monitors only accept RGBHV.
Too bad there isn't a sort of sync separator you could attach to the Scart output with a VGA output on the end of a COMP2RGB.

The Linuxbot3000 devices are great.
Here is a YPbPr to VGA converter:

Thank you for this. I think I'm gonna try this and send the garo back. Even though my gamecube has an hdmi out as well as component I'd really like to have a signal unit that works with anything that I have which uses component. The has worked with any component devices I've hooked up to it except the gamecube.
Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
Haha, very niche indeed, especially for a RGBHV version. I'll be lucky to break even on the production of the transcoders, tbh, but I'm glad people are enjoying the device.Speedy wrote:I think that many VGA monitors can support RGBS signals so I don't think the market would be big enough to support another device, but I"m not sure. Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
I'm pretty sure that the Garo and linuxbot3000 (Jam's) YPbPr to VGA transcoder actually use an identical chip, and you'll most likely see identical results. I have that version of Jam's transcoder (the SCART model as well) and ran into identical issues with it and the Garo (Mayflash as well).Charleaux330 wrote:Thank you for this. Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
Honestly if the RetroTink2xPro supported 480p passthrough it'd eliminate the need for a separate transcoder for me personally. Easy to get high quality HDMI to VGA transcoders for cheap.Charleaux330 wrote:strygo wrote:The Linuxbot3000 devices are great.

Would you have to use a different chip to support 480p on a model of the RetroTink?
Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
Yeah 480p requires a completely different chip. On a related note, I'm pretty sure the OSSC plus a HDMI -> VGA or HDMI -> component adaptor makes for a very nice transcoder.

Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
Using the externally powered, non-scaling Portta VGA transcoder out of the OSSC's HDMI is great, the fact that it's powered can sometimes make for a brighter OSSC scanline-enabled output. I personally use mine with something called a X-Vue Gamma Boost that negates all the darkness from applying scanlines. Does the same amazing work with external SLGs! The Tendak is fine but really really could benefit from an external PSU.mikechi2 wrote:Yeah 480p requires a completely different chip. That cheap metal HDMI to YPbPr that you (Mike Chi, that is) suggest is also great, the one with a slightly rounded top. AMAZING output from my Pi 3B+ when I use it on my consumer CRT.

Re: Garo Lite incompatible with some VGA monitors?
There are various solutions for getting RGBHV from an RGBS source. Extron made a bunch of sync processors that I'm pretty sure could do it, I've got one in my closet, I think it's the SC 210, which you can get on eBay for $60. I also see the Extron PA 250 on ebay that supports both sync combining and splitting for $10. I think the RGB 109xi ($20) could also do the job with the appropriate adapters.
Since it's just for converting the sync, I'd suggest the RetroTINK COMP2RGB paired with a sync converter is a high-quality option (disclaimer: I seel the COMP2RGB).
