I like lower tvl because it's what crt's looked like to the vast majority of us (whatever the mask, or age). Personally I feel using a high tvl tube defeats the purpose of going back to this tech to bring the games back to a recognizable visual form in the first place.

The difference between shadow mask and aperture grille is more than just what you see in close ups. Shadow masks are known to display texts in a smoother way, making them easier to read texts on, but for the rest the image aperture grille tubes have an advantage in clarity, color intensity and brightness/contrast. On the flip side aperture grille tubes are heavier, and used to be a bit more expensive.

Also on a more minor note they have two thin stabilizing wires, generally at the one third and two third's area of the screen. Some people see them during white or full single color screens and are bothered by them. On mid size and small size tv's these are barely noticeable at all, especially so in the later years, a lot of users can't even see them when looking for them, but still something worth mentioning.

A lot of other brands used aperture grille in later years including Panasonic (although this might only have been in the EU) and Mitsubishi. I used to mistakenly think Toshiba used aperture grille tubes in later years but actually they used invar shadow masks (flat tubes).

I distinctly remember two games that I marvelled at their arcade screens--Golden Axe: Death Adder and Street Fighter III. They looked "high def" back then to my eyes. I'm wondering if those particular cabs had aperature grills instead of shadow masks--they really stood out for some reason...
