Shmupping near Shibuya

Post by bpe »

Hi,

does any Tokyo-ite know some good places for shmupping around Shibuya, Yoyogi, Omotesando (yeah right), or in a pinch, Shinjuku ? "good" meaning, lots of shmups, good atmosphere/mood/players.. bonus points if it's 50 yen a piece :)

I can get to Akiba for 190 yen, but to and fro is still 4 games ;) Also, after going to Hey yesterday and playing Mushi for the first time in almost a year, I ran into the fourth (yes, number 4) bullet that came on screen. So I don't think I'll be going back there the first 10 years.

PS Not sure who did the Akiba map but just a note, "Smokers corner" is gone (I guess everyone that went there is dead). So that's another easy "landmark" that's disappeared, after the McD across it.

If it's gone, what's there in its place now?

Nothing :\ Both corners of that intersection are walled off, not sure what's up with that.

There's a good arcade in Shinjuku actually, Amusement Forum More. They've got 50 yen Ketsui, DOJ, Xexex, Tatsujin, and Mushi, plus Pink Sweets. It's real close to the station, but I'm not sure how to direct you to it here. I have the week off so if you want PM me and we can meet up and I'll take you to it.

Smoker's Style was there when I was last there (Feb). That McDonalds has moved somewhere... just look for the Golden arches. If you google around in Japanese there's a site with some good maps to Arcades in at lesat Shibuya and Akihabara (probably Shinjuku too).

There are roughly 10 arcades in Shibuya, but the best one is probably the 50 yen one on Center Gai (follow the slutty high school kids). They've cut down a bit, but last I was in there, they had DOJ, Mushi, ESPGaluda II, and Ibara all in a row. The bottom floor has some cool old school shit as well. The downside? Smokey... real smokey.

The bigger ones (Sega High Tech/Gigo/Club Sega, Taito Station and Namco Inti) have gotten a bit cheese recently, but when VF5 comes out, High Tech is considered the most competitive place in the area.

Hey Julian, how long are you in Tokyo for? I will probably head back in about a couple of months. Maybe we can meet if you are still there.

Thanks guys, I'll go and check these out as soon as possible :)

The non-shmuppy ones aren't that interesting, other than to watch in sheer awe at the pros. Those arcades are probably not a good place to learn if you've never touched a fighter game

The best place to learn if you've never touched a fighting game is at home.

On the contrary... I learned everything I know about VF4 at those arcades. You won't get better playing the computer, meaning home is the worst place to play.

EDIT: Oh, first time... hmm.... still need to practice against people.

I already know I suck at fighters, I just realized we have Killer Instinct at work (isn't it great to be a game-dev :) ).

But to get back on topic : for meet-ups, /me waves this thread around :)

I think I may have a chance to check out Shibuya this evening (ie Friday 5th), so if anyone else is bored and in the area, I'll probably be at the sentaa gai place GP mentioned.

[TOPIC OFF]
Don't play KI too much if you intend to get good at basic 2D fighting techniques. :)

As suggested, learn by yourself (and the net) how to do basics and to practice bread & butter techniques/combos. Good competition is the next step after that.

Actually, to be on topic and off topic at the same time : do we have any information on that Tekken-style fighting game that uses shmupping to do the moves ? I don't know the name, but it's been at Hey for at least a year, and basically you have two machines networked Tekken5-style, and then the two players throw end-of-stage-like boss attacks at each other. Anyone knows what it's called, is it any good, how does the shield (or whatever those thin circles are) thing work, when/how do you get the special moves, etc.

You probably mean Senko no Ronde, although for the life of me I can't see where you find the Tekken similarities. Personally, I don't like the game, but it has been discussed to death here and elsewhere. If no one feels like explaining it to you then try doing a search of the forums. There are several threads about it. The 360 version will be out quite soon, if I am not mistaken.

Thanks, that's it ! :) Now I have a name I am indeed on my merry searching ways.
The similarity I meant is the way they have it set up with 2 arcades back to back and a big ass plasma on the side of them for people to spectate. And then the whole duking it out with a health bar thing, I guess. :)
