Ultraman

Post by JBC »

When i was a kid i used to read Ultraman manga. I was pretty into him for awhile during the 5th grade. I'd play the Ultraman snes games and special order the comics from Previews. I remember being super excited about the Ultraman 3do game when it was reviewed in Gamefan but alas... even after i finally got a 3do years later i never was able to track it down.

Anyway. I was thinking about getting back into the character (especially now that that whole Power Rangers thing has died down and it won't be so instantly related to that if someone sees me watching one of the shows or movies).

Unfortunatly after reading the Wikipedia entries on the character i realize that there is a vast plethora of Ultraman media to choose from and well... i have no idea where to start.

Can anyone recommend some of the better Ultraman movies or episodes for me to check out? I'd like to get back up to date on the stuff but theres just so much of it! I'd like to see one of the newer movies that maybe had interesting special effects, camera work, editing, and story.

I caught a little bit of Godzilla Final Wars a couple of weeks ago and i was really impressed. I know that isn't a part of the Ultraman story but if there is an Ultraman movie that looks as good as GFW then i'd really like to check it out.

For some reason, Ultraman reminds me of a Megaman boss.

No it's not. It's not the greatest and deepest game, but it doesn't suck.

Are you referring to the fighting game? I don't even get what you're suppose to do after you've drained the enemy's life down :D !

Use the Level 4 weapon, Burning Plasma. That finishes them off.

I remember that ABC or CBS aired a short-lived modern Ultraman series around the time the SNES game launched. To put it mildly, the series was an abomination. I think was filmed in Australia or New Zealand and the action sequences were just too stupid for words. :x

That was known as "Ultraman Towards the Future". The game has the same name and it's supposed to match the events of the series. But yes. It was abominable. Even the dubbed version we got in Mexico was terrible.

Hmm... this getting back into Ultraman thing isn't looking to bright. I just watched Ultraman Next from 2004 and it totally sucked balls. I'm gonna give it another couple of shots though...

Thought this might be worth looking into as a cross-reference to more recent Ultraman stuff...

Ahh, I will try that. I love cheesy games that people can dump on, so I could probably get around to liking this game once I figure it out more :) . I'm the guy who thinks games likes Keith Courage, Sewer Shark, and Shadow Blasters are treasure.
