After being delayed for quite a while, it seems that Immortal 3 is going to be released this september. Immortal is a series of audio cds that feature remixes of classic amiga tunes redone in studio quality, often by the original musicians.
The first volume already had a great version of Project X main theme by Allister Brimble, as well as the obscure Gunbee F99 shmup (a twinbee clone, apparently).
The second volume however is truly a great cd for shmups fans, as it features tracks for SWIV, Carcharodon, Z-Out, X-Out, Battle Squadron and Lethal Excess. The X-Out theme by Hulsbeck and Lethal Excess by Hippel are worthy alone the purchase, and overall I can't recommend Vol. 2 enough, truly awesome music!
Well, finally the tracklist for Immortal 3 is out and definitive. Check all three albums so far (shmups-related tracks in green):

I would love to hear them in CD quality.
But Where is Turrican 1?

On a side note, Denaris is also available for cell phones:

Turrican 1 is on the first Immortal cd - there's an arrangement of world 5, stage 2, performed by Ruben Monteiro. It's not bad but I felt that Immortal 2 was a significant step forward in quality overall.
Also, these cds don't have the original amiga tunes in "cd quality" - they are all new arrangements, often done by the original composers. Just to clarify.

That is pretty cool, but I really wish there were some Amiga shmup Super Plays up somewhere on the internet. I've been told that it's a lot harder to capture videos from computers, but a lot of those shmups are on the CD32, and that's obviously TV-based.

Bizarre note: Chris Huelsbeck arranges the OSTs for Petra Verkaik's videos. Who's Petra Verkaik? Well...

On the cover, that picture on the top left (I guess it's the Immortal 1 cover) is an homage to a picture from some demo. Can anyone remember what it is? It looks like Facet's work, or something.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
ok, two things:
1. Thanks guys, it's pretty clear that i'm becoming blind, though.

Our beloved Amiga Chapter. One site has now a radio blog feature, and among the many great tracks you can listen to at this moment, there's the original intro tune Allister Brimble wrote for Team 17's Overdrive. A remix of which is supposed to be on the third Immortal release.
I recommend everyone to listen at it - Brimble at his best!!!
*ps, the other radio tracks are excellent too, of course, although probably much more widely known by the shmups community.

The selection of tracks on the Immortal cd:s is truly great, but.. the remixes themselves aren't really interesting (haven't listened to AI3 yet though).
The Overdrive track is nice, but I don't think it's anywhere near Allister's best.. even Miami Chase is better, and especially the Alien Breed games and Project-X. That Team 7 karate game had killer music too, anyone remember what it was called?
Most of the other radio tracks are pure diamond though! They should put some less-known classics there too, like Hired Guns.
Edit: Now I remembered the name of the karate game. Full Contact. Highly recommended.

If by "not interesting" you mean that they stay true to the original tunes, this is mostly true, and understandable since these soundtracks were never published on cd before.Shocky wrote:The selection of tracks on the Immortal cd:s is truly great, but.. the remixes themselves aren't really interesting (haven't listened to AI3 yet though).
If you just mean "poorly done" - I found the quality to be noticeably different from track to track. Project X was the one to stand out from the rest in the first immortal, Leitch's work was also good. I didn't like Monteiro's arrangement though, especially Turrican.
The second cd has some truly fine pieces of music: Lionheart, X-Out, Lotus 2, Lethal Xcess, SWIV being the best of the bunch. I didn't like Stember's Z-Out, nor Gellrich's work. Among the arrangements on tunes by other artists, Del Priore did a good job with Jim Power.
Oh, Hired Guns is pretty well known! Surely more than Dafel or Space Station 3000Shocky wrote:Most of the other radio tracks are pure diamond though! They should put some less-known classics there too, like Hired Guns.

Personally I'd like to see Menace on Immortal 4, and Martin Iveson' Jaguar XJ220 and Wolfchild. Of course...
Exactly. I have all the important amiga game/demo tracks as mp3, and I listen to them frequently, so I wasn't impressed.. and I like them to sound 16-bittish, not cd-quality. But I give my full support for these cd's anyway, they are good compositions and should not be forgotten.Turrican wrote: If by "not interesting" you mean that they stay true to the original tunes, this is mostly true, and understandable since these soundtracks were never published on cd before.
Yes, I meant that Hired Guns is less known in the "good music" category than R-Type, SotB, Apidya, Turrican etc. It doesn't get mentioned as often as it should. As a game it's quite well known, as it should. I second those suggestions for Immortal 4 musics, especially I'd like to hear Menace with real instruments.Oh, Hired Guns is pretty well known! A funny thought came to my mind: It's too bad that non-game applications didn't evolve to include music. It's a crazy idea, but one of the best Amiga tracks ever is actually on a file compressing utility called Imploder. The music is by Paul Van Der Walk (Battle Squadron, Hybris). Do you Amiga freaks remember other applications with music? I think X-Copy II or something had music.
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Well, since this has pretty much become the official thread for teary-eyed amiga music lovers, let me give you another advice:
search this:
ebay item no° 8274222924
disguised as a PCE game, what you're really looking at is an awesome redbook audio soundtrack cd by Chris Hulsbeck. His first work ever released on cd media, actually. Definitely one of the best audio cds you can purchase.
And hey, it comes with the game too; who knows, the mighty Revolution could run it one day! (if not, there's always Magic Engine)
*P.S. it's the only one on ebay atm, but I suspect it can be bought for cheaper than that if you're patient enough.

Alas, Ikaruga is going...
Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Maybe you just mean to thank me for the heads up, but in any case, let me specify that when I said "our beloved" I didn't mean that I've any affiliation with the site! I'm just a faithful readerFenrir wrote:I will love you big time for thisTurrican wrote:Our beloved Amiga Chapter. One site

My copy of Immortal 3 just arrived and I listened to the first cd - so, how did it fare? Does it surpass the previous efforts? Was it worth the wait?
The answer is a big "YES", definitely. This first cd is amazing both in sound quality and in track selection. Huelsbeck is once again the cream of the crop with the Apidya suite performed by real orchestra, and stunningly good versions of Turrican 2's Secret Dungeons and Turrican 3.
Tim Wright's Agony intro sounds incredible, Richard Joseph's Chaos Engine is not the expected intro tune but a well done medley that features the unforgettable game speech ("node activated")... The Ghouls'n Ghosts remix is also very good.
Page's Fire and Ice stays very true to the original and I enjoyed it much more than Robocod's remix on Immortal 2. Also very good is Pinball Dreams by Gustafsson, though I have to compare it with the original yet.
The Disposable Hero track, while good, definitely surprised me as I expected the Intro music. Instead it's a level tune, a weird choice perhaps.
Out of 18 tracks, just three games were unfamiliar to me Theatre of Death, Death Mask and the Plague, but unlike the first immortal, these tracks actually weren't bad surprises at all, Theatre being the best of the three, I'd say.
Well, no album is perfect so here comes the not-so-good part:
the Gods remix doesn't live up to the original. it's probably the lowest point of the cd, unfortunately. I also didn't feel much about the Defender of the Crown track - it wasn't an outstanding piece of music to begin with, and the arrangement doesn't make it any better. I guess not liking two tracks out of 18 is already an impressive achievement.
"Secret Dungeons" and Agony are my favorite so far, and Chaos Engine, Turrican 3, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Apidya, Aquaventura, Ambermoon all rank in the "excellence" category. The second cd has a lot to live up to! More impressions will follow of course.
