Because you aren't so perverted like I am, you all amighists (UP THE AMIGAS!!!!) probably don't remember a game called GEISHA. A collection of relatively erotic games with nice graphics (I have to admit it) and a very nice vertical (oOer) shmup level in between.
Well, it was crappy to tell the truth, but still. You had a phallus-kind-of ship and shot, er, things to other ships coming (err) to you.
Well it was a shmup anyway :D

I won't be talking about the really good shmup levels in Pegasus because, as far as I know, it never hit the market and just had a DEMO disk released (on Amiga Power) - a beta version with a music ripped from shadow of the beast (!). That's the one I got.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Team 17.
Yesssss!

And it`s quite similar to Aero Blaster and the Gradius "Speed" Sections.

Great!

Heck yeah! That has to be the first game I can remember that threw in a shooting level.
There has to be some earlier games that alternated between platforming and scrolling shooting gameplay. Any on Atari 2600 or 5200?

Some other more recent suprise scrolling shooter stages would be the end of Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn.
Also, Densetsu no Stafy has some brief bonus stages where he rides a broom and shoots a laser.

There's a pretty bitching shmup minigame in Atlus's Digital Devil Saga 2. It's very Shikigami-esque.

It's pretty much like Acid King wrote, the term not only sounds stupid, it's also unnecessary. And unlike you I don't have a nostalgic attachment to it. I actually saw it on this forum for the first time.

Also it kinda seems like an admittance of defeat to me. "If we call them shooters everyone will think we're talking about Quake, so we need a different name for them." That's bullshit. "Our" shooters were here first. If I really feel the need to make a distinction, I simply call them 2D shooters.
Wow. You guys sure have a lot of emotional baggage there I think. :)

Could also be a cultural difference. "Shmups" have been "shmups" to me since I started playing "shmups". Around here no-one calls anything "shooters". A "first person shooter" is universally called an "FPS". A gun game is called "a gun game", and a 2D scrolling shooter is called a "shmup". It's just accepted as so.

If I were to call a game a shooter, most folks in earshot would ask "what kind of shooter?". With that said, Metal Slug has a huge following here too (every corner store has one). That's helped tear away the FPS popularity a little too I guess.

The Metal Slug games have some shooter type sections, namely the vertical scrolling stage in MS3 and the hori scrolling stage in MS5.

I think it's just you wacky australians. I've always known them as shooters. It's a genre, like platformer or role playing or whatever. In the states people would just assume it's a first person game to which I usually just say its like a more complicated version of space invaders.

I either refer to them as 'shoot-'em-ups' or -- more recently, I must confess -- have started using the direct-from-Japanese term of 'shooting games'. Mainly because I find the latter quicker to type. ;)

Yeah, seriously. I've considered just writing them out as "STG" for quite some time but I'm afraid somebody will confuse the meaning as "strategy" instead.

I believe it is more of a regional thing. I see Brits and French folks calling them shoot-em-ups/shmups, while North Americans call them shooters, or shooting games. Both are okay, but it is all about what you are used to.

One shmup minigame that hasn't been mentioned yet is Groovy Arche in the PS1 version of Tales Of Phantasia: it's surprisingly indepth and difficult with a weapon system slightly remiscient of a simplified version of Radiant Silvergun's system. Too bad you need to get a high enough score to get to the second stage, and there's only 2 stages. It's also been ported as a standalone cellphone game in Japan, not sure if they added more stages for that one.

If you want to see a self-admittedly badly played video of the minigame, see
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eygvTRXT3GY .

It's interesting to note that you can momentarily play as this minigame's incarnation of Arche with updated graphics and fully powered weapons in both versions of Tales Of Eternia by casting a specific spell with specific requirements fulfilled.

Hmm, I'd never heard of that one. ToP never made it to the US, right? Though I'm sure there's a fan translation or something out there someplace.

I'll keep my respects to this one too. Anything where kirby doesn't have a voice...unless it involves a taunt button. Kirby games should also have been responsible for being the most copied power-up system of all time but never happened...especially Dream Land 3's.

What else...any kirby game where you fought that Dark Matter guy at the very end pretty much always had a shooter section. I know Dream Land 2 and 3 did...64's was 3d.

k. Back to my current age:

Megaman 8 has 2 stages where you ride rush jet and collect Raiden-style powerups to beef up your shooting-right ability.
Blade wrote:Megaman had a little Bird friend who you could merge with and shoot around with. Rush had a similar ability.
The Marvel vs. Capcoms had that too. For a super, you could fly amok in the Beat Plane thing and shoot-em-up a 40something combo.

er..yeah...now really really back to my current age:

Devil May Cry 1 had some sweet 3d shooter section for the first part of the final boss. I probably liked it so much 'cause I didn't see it coming. I declare here and now that game genre-switching to kick-off final bosses is groin-kickin' sweetness.

I remember Kojima saying Metal Gear 3 was gonna throw in Gradius for that jail cell dream sequence when you save 'n quit, then turn it back on after you're captured. They nixed that for some upcoming demo where you rip people in half with these wacked-out swords. But hey, they left The Code in at least.

Ha, so where do Sigma Star Saga and Guardian Legend classify in all this?
Puzzle-shmups you say? Man, if those are considered 'puzzles' for shmuppers, I'd say all of us here be filed in the special-ed bin.

Zone of the Enders 2 has that Zoradius thing.

Wasn't someone talkin' about Tekken 5 havin' some old Namco unlockable shmup thing?

And speaking "shmups" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue in a way that won't scream "I was held back a few grades." Seriously. Say shmup a few times. Doesn't it feel like your left brain is telling your right brain to omit it from all vocabulary because it sounds so goddamn silly..like...Jerry Springer trailer park silly?
Gentleman, we need to get a game out there that takes back the Shooter name and redefines it for our style of good times.

Batman for the MegaDrive had side scrolling Batmobile and Batwing shooter levels.

Magic Knight Rayearth for the Sega Saturn had a vertical scrolling shooter level at the very end.

The AWESOME Rendering Ranger for the Super Famicom had side scrolling shooter levels.

I resume this zombie thread to mention that I've just finished Beautiful Katamari for XBOX 360 and hear hear, there's a bonus 8-bit style vertical shmup during the staff roll :D  katamari-style obviously.
While the stage scrolls, you must "stick" to the enemies and if they're too big you must shoot them in order to split them (asteroid style). As you get bigger and bigger it becomes harder to avoid big enemies you can't stick to, and you must shoot a bloody lot to avoid getting trapped behind a big object and crushed at the bottom of the stage.
You've got just 1 life and... that's it
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Heh, missed this thread somehow.

I'll add 'Xak' to the list, for those who don't know, Xak is a PC-98 & MSX Action Role-playing game made by microcabin.

In Xak 1, to reach the last dungeon, you'll have to ride on a blue dragon and shoot your way through enemies
in a vertically scrolling stage. IIRC there's a boss at the end too. Feels a bit like Dragon Spirit.

I couldn't spot Segagaga in this thread - Here's a video.

I think I'm right it was a non-shmup with a shmup ending. Wasn't the main game a 'simulation'? I don't even know what that means...

Segagaga is a turn based RPG with a few other gameplay bits thrown in like
simulation, shmupping and so on, but for the most part I call this a RPG.

more info: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/ ... gagaga.htm

It's worth a read, pretty good article if you're interested in SEGA stuff but never played Segagaga...

Shooters do not exist, shooters means nothing, not a genre. (Almost every game ever created has shooting in it of some sorts. So it means nothing).
Shooting games are what we now call light gun games.
Shoot 'em ups was annoying to type se we called them shmups, but they are still shoot 'em ups, make no mistake about this
fps = first person shooters
