TurboGrafx/Pc engine emulation on Wii

Post by Old_Bailey »

I have my Wii hooked up via RGB into my CRT which for the most part, works great for 8/16 bit emulation in 240p.
For the life of me though I cannot get TurboGrafx games to look quite right, presumably because of the variable resolution across different titles. Most titles seem to run at 256x240 which is not a supported resolution in retroarch and 512x240 causes problems.
It looks amazing when stationary but scrolling introduces aweful shimmering.
The Virtual console releases work great in 240p and don't have this issue but I'm struggling to get an artifact free image through retroarch.
Has anyone here had any success with this?

256x240 is "not supported"? Sounds like the most likely resolution you'd get from almost any retro console/arcade system. Even the NES is 256x240.

Not selectable, i should say. The lowest horizontal resolution in the video options at 240p is 336x240

Also, it's my understanding that doubling horizontal resolution should display perfectly so maybe there's something else at play here? It looks to me like some form of scaling artifact though.

I also could never get PCE to look right on the Wii. With the right configuration Retroarch can look better than Madnafen or the Virtual Console emulator, and setting integer scale after there has been a resolution change should get rid of any scrolling shimmering, but it still doesn't look as sharp as a real PCE. When emulating PCE, I recommend using a Raspberry Pi outputting 240p instead of a Wii, and setting integer scaling appropriately on Retroarch after loading each game (being careful always that often title screens and gameplay use different resolutions, so integer scale should be set on a gameplay screen). But the Wii is still a good choice if you don't mind or even prefer a bit of a softer look.

Someone here converted the VC titles to correct 240p and also ported the non released titles to VC.

I have them stored somewhere..

That sounds amazing. If you manage to dig them out let me know, or if you have any idea of the method they used. Sounds like the perfect solution!

I might be wrong but I believe those were simply correcting games that Nintendo released on VC with 480i as the only display option, re-enabling 240p, but they use the same 240p scaling that the VC emulator uses in general.

I've never seen scrolling issues on any VC PCE title. They probably used 512 (2x of most gameplay) as the horizontal resolution, but then it gets stretched suboptimally within the frame of the Wii's video output. Retroarch can do it better with the same 2x horizontal scale within 640x240, but it's still not perfect. The Wii port of Retroarch has not been very well maintained for the past few years, so maybe it's just not optimized for the Wii's output, or maybe that's the best they could do.

WiiMadnafen is better for ease of use. You'll never have to touch the video settings after setting double strike. Everything is scaled nicely, though the picture quality is inferior to RA with the right resolution and scale settings.

Hi, where can I find those converted VC titles to 240p?

Thanks
