ONE update. If you could choose one classic series and one only to have a superb next gen update which would it be, for what system, what would it be like, and why?

1. Series
2. System
3. Description
4. Why?

Punch-Out for the revolution.

Using 3 controllers to play it, attaching 2 of them to gloves, and one to a helmet that the player will have to wear while playing.

Why? I hope its obvious enough. And it should have a network 2-players mode :)

1. ThunderForce
2. PS3
3. The most kick-ass TF game ever
4. It's for your own good jp! And the good of your fellow shmup-os!

BTW I only kid, so don't take this the wrong way. Now for my more serious entry.

I can't really think of anything. Most of my favourite classics are 2D, but if they're done with next-gen 3D graphics, they might very likely lose their charm... Just imagine Parodius done in Gradius V style....I can't see it working.

Seconded Thunder Force.
Any Console.
It's so awesome, TechnoSoft comes back together. And we get Herzog Drei, online.
Because without the Thunderforce series, shmups would simply be "shooters".

my wish has already been granted: Nights for the Revolution. I hope they´ll add a classic mode which can be played just like on Saturn, though.

I think i would choose Shinobi.

It would likely be PS3, just to keep with the trend.

It would be a return to either the original Shinobi story or the one from Legions but it would still be set up like the PS2 Shinobi with more elements from the older games thrown in (like hostages and maybe even the dog from Shadow Dancer).

And i think i would choose Shinobi because it just deserves it. I would really hate to see the franchise fade out again, but it looks like that's where it's headed. It's also a damn shame that such a fine gameplay system would only be used in one game. (I'm not counting Nightshade, Akujiki wasn't constantly eating away at your life in that one so it wasn't as deep. It also blew.)

A true sequel to Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which brings the greatness of the first game over to the next level instead of failing more or less miserably like the other SMS and MD games of the series did.

I want it on the revolution, because then I can play it. I won't buy a 360 and, as I did with the PS2, I'm probably going to buy a PS3 years after its first release.

Oh yes, and I want the graphics to be done buy the people who did Atelier Iris for the PS2.

.The True Secret of Monkey Island - "By Ron Gilbert this time"
.Nintendo DS
.A scumm based graphic adventure that makes use of stylus, dual screen and everything else. And most of all erases 3 and 4 from the official Monkey Island storyline.
.Why? Because I'm full of companies hodling ip rights, and creators getting screwed all the time. And DS is just perfect for SCUMM.

Herr Schatten: i must disagree, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle is a fine game! I liked it better than Miracle World.

Series: Starglider (in particular, Starglider 2)
System: Amiga/Atari ST originally; any current or next-gen home console for the port.
Description: Starglider and SG2 were absolutely awesome 3D cockpit-view shooting games. The first one was good, but the second just took it to another level with for-the-time stunning solid 3D graphics, the ability to fly almost seamlessly from planets' surfaces into space and between the planets of the solar system, loads of enemies to blast, a great if minimal plot with some funny touches, and a bit of strategy thrown into the mix. The guys responsible -- Argonaut, under the leadership of Jez San -- later went on to co-create Starfox with Nintendo, which is similar graphically but much more of a straight rail-shooter.
Why: One of the first games that combined a large amount of freedom with an action emphasis, and the primitive 3D engine is crying out for a next-gen update. How awesome would it be to see the planetary surfaces as rendered by the PS3, X360 or Wii, as opposed to the chequerboard representations found on the Amiga? :D

1. Elite/Frontier
2. Xbox 360
3. Make it like Frontier, just with better graphics and non classic music.
4. We need a new real space trading game like frontier, the games were mindboggling for their time. Now with systems capable of so much more, a modern Elite/Frontier game could be totally awesome.

(I'm well aware that others have attempted doing something similar, but they usually destroy the games with silly stories and things not really necessary).

What's the problem with classical music in Elite?

Anyway, Elite 4 is being developed, isn't it? Like, as long as Duke Nukem Forever :)

Well the classic music may be fine sometimes, but it gets annoying after a while :P. And yea Elite 4 has been in developement for ages, if they started developing it after Frontier: First Encounters, then it has already taken 11 years and still nothing. I have actually emailed Frontier Developents about it three times already during these years, I have to keep bugging them so that they don't forget about it. Everytime they answer that the game is indeed still in developement :P

1) NiGHTS

2) Nintendo Wii

3) A sequel to one of the best games on the Saturn, making use of the Wii's remote control to perform all the stunts.

4) The original is my favourite game of all time.

I think the guys behind the Elder Scrolls series has the rights to Fallout 3. If it's just Oblivion with guns, I'll be happy.

Just one? I've recently emued Megaman 2 and it got me thinking; Capcom never really did tell what happened to the original crew and what led the chain of events that would eventually lead to the Megaman X series. So how about a super hi-res 2-D Megaman 10?

Actually, I'd wish 2-D graphics would rise again. I'm tried of this bumpmapped polygon shit. Guilty Gear and Metal Slug have proven how beautiful 2-D sprites can be.

1. Viper Phase 1
2. Xbox 360 (or whatever)
3. Superb shooter from the makers of Raiden and one that never got a proper home release.
4. Everything about the first game screamed quality. So much so that I actually bought the SP-1 pcb to play it at home.

1. Rolling Thunder
2. Playstation 2, Arcade
3. Low Res 2D that plays/ has the same feel as the original.
4. The original is amazing even though it has it's flaws so it needs a definitive version.

We've all been waiting on that story for years and it's about damn time they told it. Or at least give us a new sequal to the classic games even if it isn't the finale. I love MM Powered Up but i'd really like a continuation.

No kidding.
I was blessed to have an arcade near me which up until 1997 or so, had the game on location. Sadly, I believe I was the only one who ever played it. I loved the game so much, I was planning on asking the operator if I could buy it. Sadly, the arcade shut down unexpectedly before I had the chance, along with my hopes of buying the machine from them.

Do you have the PCB in your collection?

1. Road Rash (yes)
2. Xbox 360, I guess.
3. Road Rash at best combines scenic cross-country style racing with brainless over-the-top violence. So needs as much scenic beauty and many opportunities to kick opponents into oncoming semis/over railing. And a custom soundtrack, obviously. I liked the uniformed racers in the first game, so they stay. Oh yeah, and I'd have all races take place in real life Alaskan locations. I have a few places in mind already!
4. I'm not sure if it's sad that this is what I'd want the most, but I loved RR1 on the Genesis and think none of the sequels hit that high of the initial game (while remaining easily doable).

The other one I'd want would be Tomb Raider.

1.) Guardic Gaiden (Guardian Legend)
2.) PS3 or Nintendo Wii
3.) Gameplay would have the same concepts: Dungeon (Corridors) for shooter and Labyrinth for adventure. It would be a hybrid of Border Down, Ikaruga, and Metroid Prime for the adventure element.
4.) Most underrated nes game.

Maybe I took this too literally... but circuitface you asked for classic series (i.e. more than one game has already been released) or are standalone games OK?

The EXACT same thing happened to me. They had it in the arcade at my little mall and i used to go there after school and just drop every quarter i had into that machine. I was planning on buying it and one day i walked in there and poof! It was gone, never to be seen again. :(

I don't own the PCB but i was planning on tracking down a complete, original cabinet and having it restored for my living room. It would be my very first arcade machine to call my own :o

I haven't had much luck finding a complete VP1 machine on the internet though.

Oh, that's totally fine. Even better really - because some standalone games from the back-when really deserve a sequel. *Magician Lord, cough cough*

1. ArrowFlash
2. Nintendo Wii
3. Project "Chameleon ERX-75" a lone ship that can change from ship to robot is the only means of jumping interdimensionally and putting a stop to the Great Hilagi (a giant space dragon whose stomach is the final stage in the game) and his group of Space "Viking Terrorists", help Zana Keene save her world!
4. Seriously ArrowFlash deserves a sequel, it had some awesome music, a unique form-change system which changed the direction and movement of your shots and maneauverability with chargeable or item-based attacks not unlike the now-defunct R-Type. The difference being that it actually had more weapons to choose from depending on the situation and your "options" could actually bounce shots off your ship and vice versa for weird shots. And it's from Sega anyway.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I don't believe VP1 was ever released in dedicated cabinet form, just a kit (since SPI hardware is JAMMA-based.) I've been trying to track down a VP1 cartridge myself, since I already have a JAMMA cab, as well as Raiden Fighters 1 and 2.

Of course, I have to say Kirby's Dreamland series for the Wii. I can already play them on tv with my GameBoy Player for the GC and with my SNES. Still, it would be nice to have versions well suited to HD tv or something like that.

Axelay 2 :-)

Because we were promised so. Actually, it doesn't have to retain the name at all, but another game in the Axelay/Salamander vein would be excellent. AND while we're at it, how s a bout releasing Sala 2 in the West?

Einhander 2. PS2/3

Cool new soundtrack. Cool new story. More cool mecha. Fully realized this time thanks to the power of newer consoles. More firepower and hordes and hordes of enemies, almost semi-manic. Harder difficulty; specially at the beginning.
