The Tale of Zatoichi

Finally cracked open the Criterion set. A nice simple Samurai flick. Not on the depth level of a Kurosawa or Kobayashi movie but that's okay, you don't always want that. Gotta pour one out for Hirate-san who was such a badass that he killed countless enemies while having tuberculosis. The mutual respect was there between Zatoichi and Hirate-san as true masters of their craft. I look forward to watching Zatoichi battle for justice and doing the right thing.

Watched it at the weekend. It's the first film I've ever fallen asleep to in a cinema. Wasn't too bad. Christian Bale chewing up the scenery with that accent. It was good, what I saw of it.

Edit: on the subject of going fast Grand Prix also has amazing racing sequences, lots of splitsceen directed by Saul Bass. The scenes between the races are pretty awful though. 60's soap opera levels of boredom.

Herbie Goes Bananas: **1/2

I'm sure a fair number of people here watched the Herbie movies as kids but haven't seen them since. This one is widely considered the weakest of them (aside from possibly the Linday Lohan trainwreck of a few years ago) but it's notable mostly for scenery-chewing performances by Harvey Korman as a cruise ship captain and Cloris Leachman as a wealthy passenger of said ship. The ship used in the movie is the original Sun Princess, which was interesting to see since I have cruised on Princess ships quite a bit. Fortunately, none of the ships captains I've met acted like the one in this film.

Also, seeing those two starring in a kids movie together might be slightly horrifying if you've ever seen High Anxiety, the previous movie in which Korman and Leachman co-starred. Let's just say that there's probably a reason they never showed the captain's quarters...

Specific types of Wikipedia pages aren't even universal with general formatting when they should be. Ie all team pages for say each college basketball team should have the same structure and general layout. Things like this bother me a lot tbh maybe I should take this to the annoyed thread.

I was expecting a noir movie, but got a wonderful tragic drama movie about Holywood instead. A short, but good cast, complemented by cameos of 20's movie legends.

Blood Simple (1984)
The first Coen brothers movie, from what I understand: a somewhat short neo-noir about betrayal and suspicion set in Texas. Michael Emmet Walsh plays a funny as hell detective with some great dialogue.

What a build-up. The Inglorious Bastards' type history re-write is amazing and gives that "if only"-feeling.

I was underwhelmed, because the 'buildup' lasts most of the film, with lots of filler content that's here just because it's cool, and the problem is that you know what's coming.

And...shit no, actually you're warned just before the final scene that it won't be the same as in history (Tex says charlie told them to go to that house), and as cool as the final showdown is, I couldn't help but think the rest of the film is essentially a gallery show of that era and culture Tarantino is a nostalgic fan of.

Do The Right Thing (1989) - Mookie (Spike Lee, also the film's director) is an unambitious young man trying to make a modest living as a pizza deliveryman to support girlfriend and child, as tension escalates between his employer Sal, an Italian-American who runs his pizzeria in a prominently black neighborhood along with his two sons, and his friend Buggin' Out, a slacktivist who feels that Sal is marginalizing his primarily black customers by not having portraits of black celebrities on his restaurant's wall of fame. It's not played very seriously until the last act, when someone actually gets hurt. The tragic ending unfortunately mirrors a lot of recent events and wouldn't feel out of place in a modern movie.

The Warriors (1979) - A movie that needs little to no introduction around these parts, although some of you might not be familiar with the "Ultimate Director's Cut" version, where Walter Hill decided to pull a George Lucas and made a worse version of his own movie. The changes basically amounts to adding a bunch of comic book-like transitions between certain scenes that only serves to take you out of the movie due to how out of place they are, along with a new narrated intro that explains the parallel the film's plot has with the story of Anabasis and a worse end credits. The worst thing is that it's the only version available on Blu-ray in North America, since there's no option to watch the theatrical cut on it. The FYE steelbook edition does come with the theatrical cut on a barebones DVD though for what it's worth.

Theatrical cuts should be included by law with any movie release, regardless of how good or bad the extended/director's/HYPER FIGHTING cuts may be. It's about seeing the film in its original context, for good or ill. Doing otherwise is like releasing a home conversion with Arrange Modes only. Shameful!

There's a few movies where I've manually edited extended editions that have some good stuff and some total balls. Terminator 2 comes to mind, after the recent Dark Fate trainwreck. Sarah's nuclear nightmare (but not really) hamstrings the actual scene, but lately I've liked the T-1000 showing signs of battle fatigue after being frozen solid via horrific industrial mishap, then blown to smithereens by gunshot. That can't be helpful for a phase-shifting composite machine! Used to prefer him being an invincible nightmare monster, but any good nightmare needs some grounding in reality. Also he proceeds to beat the living shit out of AHNULD anyway!

Cameron's another serial offender with this stuff tbh. Although I don't think anyone can take That Bitch Lucas's crown. This is THE best bad recut ever, imo. There are corpses less tone-deaf.

The scream was removed for the DVD release, as even Lucas realized how retarded this change was.

Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
Neo-noir with Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle (fuckin A performance!). The story is pretty standard, nothing really to write home about, but the late 40's setting and music is pretty amazing.

The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
A fine Coen brothers crime movie with Billy Bob Thornton, James Gandolfini, and more. Takes place in the 50's, filmed in beautiful B&W, and some weird as fuck dialogue, and a tragic, but ironic story. Give it a watch.

Brick (2005)
A very interesting neo-noir with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with a cast of mostly highschoolers. The dialogue is great, straight out of 40's noir, despite the movie taking place in the early 2000's.

I wonder if George Lucas suffers from some form of genuine autism or if he secretly messes with his movies because he secretly hates Star Wars fans with a passion. I really don't know how changing Sebastian Shaw's fatherly image as Anakin's force ghost to Hayden Christensen looking like a creepy school shooter is somehow more fitting for the ending shot of ROTJ.

I really like how the Blu-ray and DVD releases of Blade Runner handled alternate cuts, as it gives you one disc with the "Final Cut" and another disc with all the prior theatrical cuts. Unfortunately, the 4k/Ultra HD release is Final Cut only and I'm not sure if they will ever plan on releasing the archival versions in that format, although admittedly the Final Cut is one of the least offensive Director's Cut.

I've wondered the same about George. The Empire "YEAAARGH" and the Jedi "NOOOOOO" are genuinely things I would expect from a small child, or a man with the emotional development of one. I'm not trying to be cool n' edgy, it goes without saying that I'm pretty goddamn spergy myself. He seems like the type of guy who functions optimally as the head of an Autistic Voltron, with a few less intensely-focused spergs covering his blind spots. It's a good setup, I recommend it.

Actually, it seems the death of this model is how we ended up with utter shite like The Last Jedi. Instead of a gifted visionary and a few judicious collaborators, we get a talentless lapdog and his corporate enablers. Lucas's absolute power phase seems like the middle stage of a wasting disease.

The Irshman

Um... okay, whatever. 3 hours and 20 minutes in the day and age of series? I know Netflix wants a best picture film (this one won't get it) which is why they did this but they should have given Scorsese a time limit like most studios do. It wasn't bad. Was exciting to see Joe Pesci again, even though far more tame than the characters that made him famous. But they easily could have cut an hour out.

EDIT: That may have been a bit harsh. "Not bad" obviously doesn't do it justice. The recreation of the East Coast & Chicago of decades past was fantastic. Some of the indoor scenes look like they were framed (and colored) by William Eggleston (google him if you're not familiar). It just seemed to take too fucking long to start.

I liked it. Pacing didn't feel off compared to the likes of Casino for me, it's just a slow burn epic with a lot of characterization. I thought De Niro and Pacino both delivered great performances. The digital stuff was initially offputting and I'm not sure how long it will hold up but it doesn't bother you after a while. The length of the movie didn't bother me and I never felt bored.

I agree that the cinematography and historical accuracy was generally great, & the Eggleston comparison resonates, but idk about the Chicago scenes, none of that stuff felt like Chicago to me (compare to Michael Mann's Thief for example, obviously that has the benefit of being real).

I'm curious what you think should be cut? I feel like most of the buildup was needed to really make you buy into Sheeran's dual loyalties and the narration exposed that in a great way. If I were to criticize it for anything it'd be that Scorsese seems content to make the same movie (with the same actors) over and over, but I will give this one a nod for being a bit more somber and morally ambiguous than most.

Parasite (2019)
The trailer made it seem like a comedy, but this is black humour at it's finest. Strongly recommended watching, the hype is real. A shame it probably won't be more widespread due to the language barrier.

Not my recent watch but I wholeheartedly recommend Shoot 'Em Up (aka Rail Shooter: The Game: The Movie) starring Clive Owen. It's one of the closest thing of videogame movie looking and satire take of Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd. The main character and villain even eat carrots and have bald head.
