Raizing Boss Names

Post by trap15 »

So, I was chatting around in one of the IRC channels when I thought it'd be a good idea to make a thread for establishing the origins of the names of Raizing bosses. This thread is partly inspired by this one about the Batrider boss names: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16399

If you have any corrections, or ideas about some of these, I'd be glad to hear them. I believe Batrider and Bakraid are totally known, but some of these Garegga ones seem odd, and don't fit the general theme of rock music.

Garegga:

Code: Select all

Seems to mostly be rock music? Not sure about some of these.

Nose Lavgghin: Lavgghin is a misspelling of "laughin'" from the Japanese band "Laughin' Nose".
Madball: Taken from New York-based hardcore band Madball.
Earth Crisis: Taken from New York-based metalcore band Earth Crisis?
Satanic Surfer: Taken from Swedish punk rock band Satanic Surfers?
Black Heart: Possibly taken from "Joan Jett & the Blackhearts", or from the UPL game Black Heart?
Junkey Monkey: Taken from all-female Japanese rock band Super Junky Monkey?
Glow Squid: I have no idea, other than the animal of the same name. :/
Batrider:

Code: Select all

Theme is "punk music".

Confrict: Odd spelling of British punk band Conflict
Boredom: Single by The Buzzcocks (or possibly The Boredoms)
Deviate: Album by British metal band Kill II This
Bazzcok: Odd spelling of British punk band The Buzzcocks
Blunt: Taken from Blunt Sleazy, an EP by japanese punk/hardcore band The Execute
Sobut: Japanese rock band
Envy: Japanese rock band
Grubby: Taken from Grubby Stories, a punk album by Patrik Fitzgerald, recorded with John Maher from The Buzzcocks
Discharge: British punk band
Bakraid:

Code: Select all

Theme is mythical monsters from the famous Dungeons and Dragons. All of these monsters exist in D&D, so it's likely that D&D is the origin of these names.

Axebeak: Axe beak from Dungeons and Dragons.
Cyclops: One-eyed monster.
Leviathan: Sea monster from the Bible.
Bahamut: Large fish that supports the earth in Arabian mythology.
Barlog: Misspelling of Balrog. In Dungeons and Dragons they are called Balor (to not infringe on Tolkein's rights). The original pamphlet called them Balrog though.
Gargoyle: Winged humanoid.
Kraken: Giant octopus-like monster.
Jabberwock: A dragon-like monster.
Grell: Essentially a flying brain with a beak and tentacles.
Tiamat: Powerful draconic goddess.
Phoenix: Flaming eagle that resurrects from its ashes.
Gigamanta: Probably Giant Manta Ray. (Giga meaning Giant, manta being from Manta Ray)
Golem: Magical construct created by spellcasters from inanimate materials.
Vampire: Undead creature who drains the life from other creatures.

Japanese names according to machine translations:

Gigafacer = Gun Men
This is somewhat interesting as "gunmen" are robots from Gurren Lagann(not to mention the boss has several huge drills mounted on it) - yet Dimahoo is more than 7 years older.

Infernon = Keruberaiza
Cool Blazer possibly? Would make sense considering he has an ice and fire half.

Isn't Gigamanta based on a manta ray rather than a mantis?

I always figured he was called busturtle because the gobligans were riding in him, like a bus.

Dribiling... a play off drilling? I have no idea.

I love Batrider even more now that I know the boss names are band references. Someone at Raizing had good taste, too.

Nice summary, trap!

Little typo, I think Lav(a)gghin is spelled without an a.

What do you mean? How we know what the bosses are called? The screen tells us.
example, this one is Envy.

no, it doesn't imply that the question was meant to be broad. i don't know why you would assume i can't read some text, but wouldn't assume that i was referring to something not at all obvious.

whatever, it doesn't matter. i just want to know where these names actually come from.

It's probably written in the game handbook.

edit: see that's what i'm hoping for
Sigh all you want. "These names" imply that the question was broad, rather than specifically referring to one of the games, Garegga. I did not mean to be rude, just answering you question where these names are generally from.

DMC is correct, it should be Lavgghin without an "a". I think it stands for "nose laughing", but with awful speeling. It makes sense once you remember that "garegga" itself is supposed to mean "garage"...

I'd still guess it's lavaging, since nasal lavaging is actually a thing :-P I don't know what nose laughing would be :?

Sly humor with Engrish spellings...gotta love Raizing with their cool sense of humor. Yes, it'd be nice if they were to return to the arcade shmup genre and release another new shmup IP or even do another proper shmup sequel. That'd be one for ages (since their swan song with the Brave Blade PCB conversion kit back in 2000).

Sorry to awaken this ancient thread, but I’m pretty sure Infernon’s Japanese name is a reference to Kerberos—or, to use the Latin spelling, Cerberus. So it’s a reference to the dragon’s three heads.
