Radiligy vs. Trizeal
Hello.
If you had to choose between these two games, which would you choose? Just deciding which one to get first.
Thanks.
John

Re: Radiligy vs. Trizeal
Well, the name of this thread could also be "Apples vs. Oranges", as both games play as differently as two shooters possibly can.WedgeAntilles wrote:If you had to choose between these two games, which would you choose? Just deciding which one to get first.
Radirgy is a score-centric game. If you're only playing for completion, you might get bored of the stages in the first half of the game, because apart from the bosses and midbosses no enemies seem to try to actively kill you. If you're playing for score, however, the first half of the game becomes one hell of a challenge, because it's very difficult to keep your multiplyer up all the time and squeeze every little bit of score out of those first stages. However, that doesn't mean that Radirgy is easy to complete. It offers a solid challenge, but it's clearly more fun to play for score than for survival. Also keep in mind, that Radirgy has a quite complex weapon/scoring system. People tend to underappreciate Radirgy, because they just make a quick play using the bubble shot (with which advanced scoring is nearly impossible), notice that no one is shooting at them and that there are almost no pretty patterns to navigate, and call the game boring. Not as important as the gameplay, but Radirgy has a very unique art style (nothing jawdropping but very stylish) and quite interesting music.
Trizeal is more interesting when you're playing for completion. You can play it for score (which is very difficult because you can lose your medal chain quite quickly), but the focus is clearly on survival. Trizeal has some very interesting level designs with quite original scenes not seen in other shooters. It has a lot of diversity. No stage is similar to any other. The weapon system is easier to master than that of Radirgy, giving Trizeal more of a "just blast away" feel. Trizeal is definitely easier to get into than Radirgy. However, the Graphics aren't looking very well and the sound is good, but nothing special.
So, I can't really recommend one game over the other. It all depends on your preferences. Do you prefer a "Compile meets Takumi" type of gameplay (Radirgy) or a game with an early nineties feel and a strong oldschool vibe served with a few original ideas (Trizeal)?
I personally think both games are excellent and tend to be underrated for various reasons. I like Trizeal a wee bit better, but that's just me. Other opinions will vary.

Well, Herr Schatten's answer could even be the end of this thread. It's just what you wanted to know. By the way, I could add up (without sounding like an idiot) that I don't like Radilgy because that kind of system isn't what I'm looking for when I play a shmup. Moreover, the graphics are really too monochromatic and that kind of style isn't exactly my buzz.
Trizeal, on the other hand, is quite original but keeps an old-school flavour that pleases me. If I had to choose, and that's what you're asking for, I'd chose Triz over Rad.

Alas, Ikaruga is going...
Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

And another endorsement for the breakdown Herr Schatten gave on the games (though with the remark I like Radirgy considerably less than he does).
So I'd defenitely pick Trizeal (just a shame I got bored of the first stage so quickly and of course you have to play that all the time to get through the game
). The game really picks up after stage 2 and I for one especially loved the extra lifting game and the cool boss music.

Herr Schatten is right on about this. I really like the graphical style of Radirgy, but, as he says, nothing jaw dropping. What has kept me from really spending time with the game is the offputting complexity of the scoring. Admittedly, I'm somewhat slow in figuring out scoring systems in part because I'm relatively new to shmups. But I really have no idea what is going on in Radirgy.

Trizeal was fun. Not very complex, but it has a lot of neat "extras" thrown in... i.e. the dragon in level 1 and the space invaders in level 3. Really, its a big ugly homage game, but unlike Chaos Field its actually fun, so... yeah... I enjoyed it.
Rajirugi... I got bored of it after the first 3 hours of owning it.

Agreed. I'll go back to Kirby next week. I just gave Valpairo a brief run to express my appreciation to Psikyo for sucking up at least 75 hours of my life over the past year. I'll go back to Valpairo again for a week if I get to 1-7 in a Psikyo game (so far 1-6 is my best).SAM wrote:Where is professor ganson?Ceph wrote:Seconded. Kirby was cool. Trizeal that's one that I just couldn't get into. For every cool moment in the game seemed like I had to get through two boring moments that just made me want to switch the game off. Had many sections with no enemies or a pattern would just repeat too many times.
Still I'd say Radirgy is the better game even if everyone seems to be ragging on the game pretty hard. I'm not so hot with scoring systems but still managed to turn a score that I felt competent with in the game. Seems to be more user friendly than most of the Cave or Takumi scoring systems.
The main problem with Radirgy is that the level design is good it's just very silly. Sure your not dodging bullets constantly but it does have plenty of them and still making sure all of the enemies are destroyed does kind of compensate for that. Bullet patterns in the game are a problem also. The game just does not throw out bullets in a well-structured way.
And yes the graphics certainly aren't making the Dreamcast crunch numbers very well but the style of the art looks really cool to me. Kind of has an urban art look to it. But I like the look of cell shaded games. I still think Radirgy is great game and don’t see myself getting burned out on it anytime soon.
But that’s just what I think doubt I’d like the game as well as I do if Takumi would put together more games.
And Kirby is way cooler than Valpairo.

Just to make sure - you already have Ikaruga, do you? If not, buy that one. Or Bangai-O? Mars Matrix?
Okay, that`s not what you asked.
I would say you just download some vids from http://www.super-play.co.uk and try to figure out what appeals you more. I just saw the Trizeal replays, and while I can understand that everyone has a different taste, THIS is an UGLY game. And I thought Psyvariar was ugly - and at least that was a remarkably innovate game. But Trizeal.... Even if you have a desire for oldschool-shmups, why don`t take the ORIGINAL old-schoolers, like Raiden or the like, that look ten times better? Trizeal looks like a Doujin game made by one person (but then again, there are ZUN and Kenta Cho, so that wouldn`t be an excuse). I already played XII Stag, and while it bored me a lot, the graphics were nice, so I don´t know why they went for this extremely barebone low-polygon look. How anyone could spend his time with this game rather than the tons of other quality shmups, old-or newschool, is beyond me.

Yes, Trizeal is quite ugly, but it's a quality game nonetheless. If you're into shmups solely for the graphics, this is obviously not the game for you, but from a gameplay perspective Trizeal has quite a lot to offer. It's also not as "oldschool" as most people seem to think. Its pacing is more akin to the likes of DonPachi or Rayforce.
Btw, it actually was made by a single person (plus an artist and a musician).

As for Radilgy / Trizeal, I'd have to go with Radilgy myself, it plays better pure and simple.

Maybe I should have made clearer that I did only watch replays. By the way, is Triangle Service bankrupt? I wanted to give the Lift x3 minigame a shot to get a bit of a gameplay impression but the site is down.
On a sidenote; while I never wanted to be a purist, I just don`t get how they got from that graphically impressive XII Stag to such clunky graphics. Maybe the artist didn`t work on this one. There was a time I wondered what all this polygon vs sprites fuzz was all about - that was the same time I thought every polygon shooter looks as good as Ikaruga and Gradius V
