Spell Caster and Mystic Defender
I know both these games are old as well maybe some of our forumers but are the two games related. Spell Caster on SMS which is fairly ok and Mystic Defender on Genesis which kicks ass IMO are apprarently based on the same anime. The Peacock King I think. Is that true?
Oh and did you like Mystic Defende, as I found it awesomer

Yes, both originate from the Peacock King anime, although at least Mystic Defender has a protagonist with a modified sprite from his JP self. Peacock King (known as Kujaku-oh in JP) was released in the US on VHS back in the late 90s.
I personally thought Mystic Defender was a decent enough game; not a fave though.

Mystic Defender, to me, is like a more fun version of Magician Lord. If you like that style of game you should also try Jewel Master.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

Mystic Defender did introduce me to the wonderful world of pixel nudity, though.

Ha, I'm one of those Magician Lord haters. Not a terrible game, but it is brutally cheap at times (unlike, say, Shinobi, which is hard but fair).

One thing that's interesting about Mystic Defender is that the Japanese and US versions differ a lot. The Japanese version has an animated intro sequence totally absent from the US version, it has a better (and completely different) looking character sprite and one of the weapons works totally differently (I forgot which one, sorry). The US and European carts actually contain both versions of the game. Which version you will play depends on the region of your console. Some other MD and SMS games have two different versions on the cart, but normally only the title screen changes (examples: Ghouls'n'Ghosts/Daimakaimura, The Super Shinobi/The Revenge of shinobi, Aleste/Power Strike, etc.). Mystic Defender is the only game I'm aware of that changes gameplay depending on region.
I remember learning a long time ago that Spellcaster and Mystic Defender were linked. I mean, I thought it was odd that the lead characters in both games looked so similar when I first got Spellcaster (yeah, I had a Genesis first), but once I learned that Mystic Defender was basically "Spellcaster 2", then it all made sense.
It's a shame that there's no Game Genie code to unlock the stuff in Mystic Defender, like what can be done to fight (and play as) Ash in Streets of Rage 3. It'd be fun to see everything.

Personally, I think Mystic Defender is one of the few launch titles for Genesis that still holds up today. It has excellent music, competent graphics, & good gameplay. I mean, compare it to other early titles like Last Battle or Altered Beast & you'll see what I'm talking about.
I agree w/ the recommendation of Jewel Master. I have that game as well & it's very similar in style, though it's weapon system is a bit more complex. It plays very similarly, though. It also has a similar difficulty curve to MD - it gets tough roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through & picks up quite a bit.
Another game that's similar to MD in some respects (theme & uniqueness) would be Shadow Blasters, though I think that game's learning curve & immediate difficulty is somewhat off-putting. I never got into it much, despite the fact the premise was cool.
Mystic Defender better than Magician Lord? I think not. Magician Lord might have way better graphics, but the difficulty of ML is nearly unbearable. I think MD has a much more balanced difficulty curve & is actually fun to play.

FRO, give Shadow Blasters another shot sometime. Yes, the game is brutal from the get go, but I found it real easy to get accustomed to after a few play throughs. The game is actually pretty easy once you level up all your characters attacks/walking speed and get the boss patterns down. The final boss fight however, is quite annoying despite being easy.
...
Magician Lord isn't that bad difficulty-wise really. Just a lot of memorization and correct form usage (although the controls are quite unforgiving at times). There's a 1CC superplay of the game out there; follow the same setups as that player and you'll likely find bosses much easier than you imagined.
