Outrun 2006

Outrun 2 is a damned fun game...is this an improvement?

I bought an Xbox live sub about a year ago but never activated it, wonder if it'll work still

I got the PS2 version yesterday and played a couple races.

One thing I noticed is that it's a lot less punishing than Outrun 2. Smacking into cars slows you down a little but will not instantly you break you. Also clipping walls will knock your speed down but I have yet to seriously crash which is interesting since I made some pretty wild mistakes.

There's serious room for improvement however I think. Sega may have made the game a bit easier to "finish" but getting good times is going to be a lot more difficult(and interesting) with the implementation of slipstream.

And for anyone that has seen the Marukaba(sp?) videos those show neigh-perfect run-throughs of SP.(In some of those races I didn't even see the speedometer dip a km/h below max speed).

However next chance I get I'm turning in the PS2 version for the XB version. Mainly because I'm used to the controls(PS2 analog is way too touchy for racers) and the PS2 version has some annoyances that bug me.(For one the game takes up 1.4 megs on a memory card).

Also from what I've read the Single-player mission modes are less infuriating.(Some of the later races in Outrun 2 were 30 minutes long and susceptible to lousy rubberband AI which could kill near-perfect runs).

I have not played Outrun 2, only 2006. But considering there is a whole new set of courses in 2006 I think that is a pretty valid reason to get the game :). When I first got the game I lost a whole nights sleep, awesome stuff best thing since Ridge Racer 4 :D

I think the game is out in the US already.

I should probably get the game sometime, if I can find the AV cables for my Xbox. I'd really love it if Sumo fixed the annoying load times that plagued Outrun 2, since that was the only real thing that held the game back from being great.

Well this is the PS2 version afterall but the load times really aren't much better than Outrun 2. However for the singleplayer mode they've added a mileage counter.

Basically the miles you get ingame can be turned in to buy unlockables like new cars/tracks/songs/etc. So even if you quit a mission after screwing up terribly you still get the miles you traversed.

The Xbox is the game's native hardware, so it technically should be the same as the arcade version.

Well surprisingly the game looks decent and runs at a smooth 60 FPS most of the time. I've noticed under certain conditions the framerate will crap all over the place however. Image quality isn't the greatest either(rather "jaggy" I would say compared to the Xbox version).

well having played outrun 2 for the xbox (not c2c) and owning this latest c2c for the ps2. outrun 2 looked smoother and sharper, the ps2 version is pretty sharp and crisp also, would make a world of difference if i had some component cables :)

My brain wasn't working at the time I posted that reply. Sorry about that.

That pretty much sums it up from what I've heard from other people. UK resistance has a feature on it comparing all of the versions (except PC).

The PC version got delayed again, didn't it? That would probably be the one to get, I suppose.

You might want to check out Circuit City as they do sell the older XBox game titles such as Outrun 2 for $39.99.

Good Luck finding a copy...

Playing OutRun with custom soundtracks is just... wrong. You're almost defeating the purpose.

Anyway, the Xbox version of OutRun 2006 is available, it's just nobody is stocking it. Amazon.com is shipping it thru J&R Electronics, which is odd considering they usually sell video games thru Toys 'R Us.

Every store I've walked into has the PS2 and PSP versions, though. I got my local GameStop's last PSP copy today. I still want it for Xbox.

I think the big stirrup with Congress' new bills under development has something to do with the Xbox version not being distributed over in the US yet. Just a hunch though.

I'd take Custom soundtracks personally.

Unlike the rest of the world I don't find the soundtrack to Outrun to be very interesting.

My choices instead would be:
Initial D, Daytona USA, Daytona 2001(only good thing about that remake), Touring Car, Sega Rally 2, eh I dunno.

Heart Attack mode is better than ever. I love it when the girlfriend requests that you smash into cars.

Looking for a US Xbox copy? Check out your Fry's if you're lucky enough to have one nearby. Just got my second copy today and am loving this game. Even though Sumo Digital did most of the work, Sega barely redeemed themselves for the HUGE disappointment that is Panzer Dragoon Sega Ages for publishing this baby.

You're not supposed to try to comprehend it. I mean, there's even a House of the Dead game where you attack with a keyboard instead of a light gun.

Also, the time of day and weather changes in the blink of an eye while mountains just suddenly appear. It's OutRun. It's not supposed to make sense, it's just supposed to be fun.

They've also added some cool stuf in the sky between the stages like birds, hot air balloons and if you're really good you'll get a Panzer Dragoon or Afterburner flyover.

So what's the difference between 2006 and SP? I have Outrun 2 and the Japanese version, unfortunately, my modded XBox has been kaput for the last 2 or 3 years and never played it. Are SP's new tracks 2006's, then? Thanks! One of the best racers of this generation, by the way.
