This. It varies from person to person, so use whichever you find more comfortable or enjoyable.

For fighting games there's no question that an arcade stick is better. Some controllers can fare incredibly well such as the 6 button Genesis pad, the Saturn pad and the Neo Geo Pad (most of which have recent versions that can run on newer consoles, Neo pad even has 6 button versions), the main reason being that directional are great (real Neo pads even has microswitches). It's worth noting that the PS4 dpad is substantially better than any PS controller before it. Still if you want to give your hands a more relaxing experience it's worth buying a stick. Not just for fighting games, but also any arcade kind of game, it will give you a more authentic experience too.

Any stick is good, what matters is that you find the layout comfortable and that the components suit your needs. Most people favor Sanwa JLF for the stick. Myself I do use the JLF but stock I find it has too large a throw, once I put in an actuator it works remarkably well for my needs. Alternatively I like the Seimitsu LS-40 a lot too. For buttons I like Sanwa the best but Seimitsu does great too if you like to not have over sensitive buttons that can activate accidentally, conversely though in very long play sessions that lighter activation makes for less tired hands.
