Good sites to write game reviews on to "get noticed&quo

A place where you can chat about anything that isn't to do with games!

Good sites to write game reviews on to "get noticed&quo

Post by dave4shmups »

My eventual career goal is to become a video game journalist, and write for a gaming magazine.

I've been told that "luck", and "being in the right place at the right time" are the main factors, but...well, that's pretty discouraging, to say the least! :(

I wrote a review of PS2 Rygar on Gamefaqs, and a blog on 1up.com about my experience at this year's GDC, but have since been told that it's better to write reviews on "fan sites". I'd love to do some on here, but I have no idea how to take screenshots from MAME, for example, and I don't know how well the reviews would get noticed. It would seem to me that broader-based websites, like Gamefaqs, would get noticed more.

1up.com is frustrating, because you cannot write a review of any game that EGM, or one of their other magazines, hasn't reviewed. I guess I could try IGN; insiders can now write blogs on there.

A good buddy of mine said to write one game review a day, but I just don't know quite where to really go hardcore with this, so to speak, so I can further this goal.

Maybe you could write for them? http://www.ccgr.org/
No sex either :P

PS.
Just poking fun at you, don't take it serious. You can take screenshots in MAME by pressing F12, or you can press print screen and then paste it into any graphics application you have. About the reviews, well, there is a new review section right here on this board... Good luck!

Yeah, I'd recommend you trying to hone your skills here first.

Funny thing too is that a direct link my review was caught by google and I'm assuming that's where all of the views are coming from. =\

No offense taken, thanks for the advice! :D

So, what about fan sites for specific game series? I originally thought that that was where people were trying to tell me to contribute to.

I never said anything about going to contribute to fan sites if all you want to do is practice creating game reviews.

Here's a challenge for you: try and beat the overall quality of the review I put up on this forum. It shouldn't be too hard. :D

I used to be a journalist, albeit reviewing books (and for a short time restaurants, as a food critic :D ). Although I've not worked as a video game specialist, I've still learnt a few things that might be relevant for you. Here are my top tips, for what they're worth:

1.) Apply for jobs. APPLY FOR JOBS! You need to keep close tabs on the vacancy situation at every publication that might even be slightly relevant, and apply like a shot if anything comes up. Or even before; you're unlikely to be employed just by sending something in, but if nothing else it may have a positive effect if you ever apply for a vacancy.

2.) Don't become a crazy 'employment stalker', though. That doesn't really create a good impression. ;)

3.) Focus on the quality of your writing, as that is what would hopefully cause you to stand out from the crowd. Think hard about clarity, detail and how useful your reviews are.

4.) I'd say that sites like this are a good idea -- but with qualification. Shmups.com is full of educated individuals, but the range of games covered is very narrow. Conversely, the problem with places like GameFAQs is that they are full of total idiots, but the advantage is that they cover games of all genres. You don't want to paint yourself into a corner, genre-wise. If you do submit reviews to this site, you should also be submitting reviews to a good quality pan-genre site, at the very least -- and by 'good quality' I mean somewhere that ideally isn't full of clowns like GF is. ;) Someone who only reviews shooting games is not really employable; you have to have a broad portfolio of past work.

5.) Writing for local papers and so on is a good idea -- even if you have to offer your services for free. There are quite a few local rags that always need more good quality content and are correspondingly more likely to accept your (well-written) work. It might be Shitsville Weekly, but a review in print is 100 times better than one that's just on your hard drive.

6.) Finally, it is indeed about luck -- but there's some truth in the saying that you make your own luck. So get out there and do it!

Good luck. :D

Sounds like great advice Eps!

Also dave, I'm not sure about that "one review a day" thing. If you're only spending a day at most playing a game, I don't think you'll have dug deep enough into the game to write a meaningful review. The better you know the game you're reviewing, the better your review will be.

In fact, I think this alone will help you stand out from the masses of game reviewers who just try to do their 0-day articles after playing the game for 15 minutes. Play the game well, write your review, proofread and revise, and then release when you are sure that it's the best possible thing you have to show the world.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

So, what's a good, qualtiy, pan-genre site? 1up.com seems to be good, but, again, you can only write reviews in your blog, unless you're writing about a very recent game.

Which brings up one other point-I've been told that blogging is a good way to get noticed, as well.

I actually don't think the blog in 1up.com is such a bad idea; the only thing there is that, with blogs, the art is in getting people to come to you. As for the sites, I have to confess that my knowledge of smaller but more credible American sites is limited. I have a few British sites I frequent, but sites that only people from the UK visit aren't much good to someone looking for a job in the US. ;) This is an area where I don't "know the market" very well, so to speak, hence my rather fuzzy recommendations in my previous post. Might have to do some more homework on this, though, as I'm moving to the US myself in three months!

One thing I definitely want to emphasise is getting your work in print: not so much for the purpose of getting spotted (though it's far from impossible), but because a load of printed reviews in your portfolio is a nice thing to have come interview time.
