The other day I put the Nexzr PC Engine CD in my CD player to listen to its excellent soundtrack when I discovered the following:
The first track contains the usual warning message that this is not an audio CD and the data track may damage your speakers. The odd part: Nexzr's warning mesage is voiced by Toru Furuya and Shuichi Ikeda, who are better known for their roles as the main characters of Kidou Senshi Gundam, Amuro Rei and Char Aznable. And here they sound exactly like Amuro and Char.
Furuya is also voice-acting during the intro (which is missing from the Summer Carnival edition of Nexzr). During the intro you can also see a shot of a space colony from Gundam. All this is weird because the game's story is definitely not set in the Gundam universe.
Nexzr oddity, Gundam connection

It's interesting that the voices are from the same people who did MS Gundam, I never noticed when I was playing it.
It doesn't seem usual that many motifs from the Gundam universe are borrowed. Alot games are Gundam look alikes, just take a look at Spriggan MarkII (a good side-shooter with a hint of Sidearms).

Gaijin Punch also mentions that in his mini review:

Since I've never seen more than 10 minutes of Gundam it never occured to me though. Maybe also because I own the Summer Carnival version.

Just got this game to go along with my new(ly received) PCE Duo, and it really is essentially Gundam in a spaceship. Even in the intro, you got the space colonies that look like the Sides from Gundam, as well as the voice of Amuro Ray - Toru Furuya.
Man, this game's hard! It's amazing how much harder a shooter becomes when you can't bomb your way out of tight spots...

Yeah, it's really great. So perfectly crafted. No bombs, no speedups. No bullshit. More people need to know about Nexzr!ahnslaught wrote:Just got this game to go along with my new(ly received) PCE Duo, and it really is essentially Gundam in a spaceship. I love this game so much I got both the original release and the Summer Carnival edition (which includes the carnival level but lacks the anime intro).

Ooh...I'm jealous. I wish the regular release had the 2 and 5 minute score modes. At first, I thought it was a useless feature, but having spent way too many minutes playing the modes in Soldier Blade a while back, I'm hooked. Not like I'd be on the high score boards or anything, but it's still a fun challenge when you don't want to get your ass handed to you all the time from a game.
I really am impressed with how this game still feels plays, even after all these years. Sometimes, simplicity is the best, instead of crazy bullet patters or intricate scoring mechanisms. The PCE really is amazing for its time, and I am so glad that i finally get to experience it, even though it's almost 20 years too late.
