Silent Hill The Movie(May Contain Spoilers)
Silent Hill The Movie(May Contain Spoilers)
Saw it earlier today. It captured the atmosphere of the game beautifully. I couldn't help smiling when they played the theme music, and when they showed a map of the hospital. And the "Janitor" - Colin, is one nasty SOB.
Anyone else?

Easily the best movie I've seen this year.
I really enjoyed how majority of music is taken from the games, that's a nice touch. The town was captured quite well (as a friend told me, it was filmed in a local Ontario town) and the movie moved along at a good pace.

'Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon.'

i thought it captured the feel of the first 3 games very well, but i wasnt big on the acting or the dialogue too much. i loved the music as well, though, and recognized a couple from the original silent hill PSX game.
i thought it started out great, and got better and better until the middle, then it got lamer and lamer and then it was over! and (POSSIBLE SPOILER) the ending was the trademark silent hill ending, which means IT WAS A LET DOWN.
overall it was fun to down some beers and see it with some friends at the theater, but i'd rather play through SH3 again or something.
SPOILER ALERT:
i thought pyramid head was incredible, i just wish there was more of him and some backstory on him! i never played SH2. Also, Colin was the most disgusting thing i've seen in awhile, and i thought it was great!
the bad guys looked awesome but i just wish they showed them some more.
Pyramid Head stands as the only game character I have actually been afraid of finding in my home in the dark when I go to the bathroom, making me turn on all the lights on the way there. I guess I must atone for my sins in order not to give him any opportunity to come torment me.
Though I don't think SH2 is the best in the series. Perhaps one of the most disturbing, but nothing beats the original in terms of true opressive suspense and terror.

Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
The first is the scariest without a doubt, but the second is one of the very, very few games to have an emotionally mature plot and intelligent uses of symbolism. It's a much smarter game than the original (hell, it's a much smarter game than 99% of games out there), and although it isn't as viscerally shocking as the first game is, I'd argue it's much more emotionally affecting in the long run. It's a beautiful game, ugly as it can be.Specineff wrote:Though I don't think SH2 is the best in the series. If the person playing can pick the game apart and catch all the little details that make it such a great experience... then yes, I agree 100%.sethsez wrote:The first is the scariest without a doubt, but the second is one of the very, very few games to have an emotionally mature plot and intelligent uses of symbolism. Otherwise, when you beat the game you're just like "OK... I just spent 8 hours running around in the fog for this?"
At least, that was my initial response, before I went back and read up on the plot (I know I know, I cheated myself).
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
I don't get out much anymore.
So I watched a camcorder'd version that was all dark and had people coughing and stuff. For 75% of the film, I couldn't see what a Hell was going on.
I think I'll have to rent this when it's out on DVD...
Oh and I've only played about an hour of SH2. And then I died. It was on the easiest difficulty setting too.

Well, it's definitely something you have to be in the right mood for. Silent Hill 2 will either float by like nothing or dig deep under your skin depending on what frame of mind you're in and whether you're taking in all that it's saying. The first game is more consistently scary because the scares are less... "personal" isn't the right word, but it's what comes to mind first.
Basically, you get out of Silent Hill 2 what you're willing to put in. It's an easier game to block out than the original is.

Yeah, I loved it the second time through when I was actually looking for the symbolism and getting into it.sethsez wrote:jp:

I wish it was backwards compatible for 360... I've been itching to play through it again. Such great music.
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
I just went and bought SH2 for PS2 yesterday for 8 bucks and I'm already loving it.
it really has the feeling of you seriously DONT know what's going to happen around that next corner. not to mention the environments just LOOK plain scary by themselves.
i'm only an hour into it, though, so we will see what happens next.

As a movie, it was okay, but as a Silent Hill movie, it was excellent. If that makes any sense.
Be attitude for gains:
1) Be praying...
2) Be praying...
3) Be praying...
And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

If you've played the games (especially the first), then you'll appreciate the movie.Nei First wrote:You just answered my only question, thanks! I'm extremely surprised that the majority of feedback here is positive (for the movie, that is...I think SH2 deserves nothing but positive feedback, as it's one of the greatest games I've played with the single best story I know of in a game). After seeing the movie at the very first showing and mulling it over ever since, I think I've finally decided that I did like it. But I think it could've been a great deal better. It's certainly getting massacred by reviewers and many fans.
I think it's probably the best game movie yet, but it's still not all that great. The first hour feels very game-y, as the characters travel from one location to another without making huge progress. Though it starts out a little campy, it gets better, and much much better, towards the end. Almost all the music in the film is straight out of the games (all four of 'em), but several tracks are re-recorded with some added touches and little bits of new stuff tacked on. Promise (reprise), the song from Angela's attempted suicide scene in SH2, is used four times throughout the movie. Several of my favorite tunes were used. Most of the best were left out (which I see as a good thing). I would have preferred a great deal more original music with an homage here and there, but this worked well too.
It's pretty gory, and extremely graphic in parts. A few unexpected things happen, and while the plot follows that of the original game fairly closely, there are a few deviations and some aren't entirely explained. If you've read Roger Ebert's review, he's full of shit - the general plot is actually quite easy to understand, even if you haven't played the game (I have to guess at that part obviously, but I think it explains most of the events just clearly enough, without over-explaining too much). The acting is pretty solid. There are a few lines of dialogue that I didn't care for, but nothing that kills the immersion. And the overall atmosphere of the series is preserved extremely well. And that's probably the most important aspect of the series.
All in all it isn't as good as I was hoping but it's an enjoyable watch and I think most survival horror fans would enjoy it. Most Silent Hill fans will be pretty happy with it. I was hoping for at least one person to rattle a doorknob and declare, "The lock is broken; I can't open it." But no such luck.

Hell yes, I loved it. It had a really creepy, oppressive atmosphere, some reasonable acting, a slightly messy plot (This is Silent Hill though), and Pyramid Head, who justified the enterance fee by himself.
Agreed with all the positive stuff regarding 2 above by the way. I'd like to play it through again to get the full benefit of the story though.

Looks like the DVD will probably have more gore, as at least one of the best Pyramid head scenes got edited. Read Neo Rasa's post in the other thread (with picture). I don't remember the end shot of Pyramid head holding the body.
