Lightgun Games

Post by 99pence »

What are the best lightgun games and what are the most accurate console lightguns? (Playstation and on)

Are there any lightgun websites. If not, there should be.

Thanks

Anything by Sega or Namco really. My favs have always been house of the dead 1 and time crisis 1 but seeing as neither got a good home conversion they're best played in the arcades. I dunno why but i've never been able to get into lightgun games at home it just doesnt feel right. I wish they had gungames in the city centre where i live, i used to enjoy my credit a day on house of the dead and time crisis after work. :x

Elemental Gearbolt is the best light gun I have played. Great ambiance to it.

Any of the Time Crisis games.

Time Crisis 3 is very good. When you complete the first game, a 2nd game unlocks. This is played from the perspective of the lady, but with the same physical world (you just take different paths and fight different people). It's very good.

After that, you play the ever-so-frustrating crisis missions.

It's a great game.

Not sure if the sentiment is shared, but I like Vampire Night. It's less about shooting rapidly and more about accuracy. And hey, shooting vampires and demons is cool. :D
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I love House of the Dead 2 DC, though it has no pedal or scope. However, House of the Dead 3 is on Xbox with House of the Dead 2 unlockable. HoD 3 is an awesome game too, from what I played in arcades. I also love the DC port of Virtua Cop 2 even if it's only 30 FPS. If you can find the Sega Smash Pack cheap, I recommend it. I also loved playing Confidential Mission in arcades, which should be the same as the DC version. The Mad Catz Dreamblaster is a very good gun.

I really want to get some of those PS/PS2 light gun games, though.

Isn't Time Crisis 1 PSX a good home conversion?

Isn't Time Crisis 1 PSX a good home conversion?
No way, it's terrible. I used to able to finish it on 1-life in the arcade with a time of 10:04. But on the ps1 version i was lucky to get 11:00. From what i can tell the hit detection on the bullet shot is smaller and theres lagg on the shot. A good example of this is the start of the last level where you need to move around the screen pretty fast from one side to the other, this was almost impossble after playing the arcade version becasue of the lagg on the shot. It's like: aim....pause....fire... On the arcade it was instant.

Correct me if I'm wrong but TC1 also runs on 30fps in contrast to the arcade's 60fps. I've never played it, so I can't attest that it looks better or play better. I'm happy with my PSX version.

I think TC3 is awesome. Easily the best TC ever. Get it at all cost if you're a light gun fan. TC2 is good. TC1 is decent. Crisis Zone is decent. TC: Project Titan is decent (from what I hear).

If TC is not up your alley, then try Vampire Night. It's cheesy and a tad uninspired at parts, but it still can be considered good. Ninja Assault is decent. The rest I don't know.

The most accurate home lightgun, bar none, is the GunCon 2 through Component Video cables. (For Playstation 2.)

The best software for this gun is:
- Vampire Night
- Time Crisis 2
- Time Crisis 3
- Crisis Zone
- Resident Evil: Dead Aim

Xbox lightguns are not accurate, and there is only one good piece of software for it (House Of The Dead II+III). Although you can also play great Xbox Mame titles with it like Taito's Space Gun, with a fair (not 100%) amount of compatibility if you have a modded system.

There is no lightgun support at all for Gamecube.

^ Resident Evil Dead aim good?

Tell me more! I'm a sucker for all things Resident Evil. The game has garnered some bad rep, so what's your answer-to-shut-all-the-naysayers?

Yeah, the XBOX definately needs a good light gun. I'm skeptical about whether or not it'll ever get one.

Can't you play House of the Dead III with a controller? I don't mind doing that with light games that allow you to do it; I actually really enjoy it! I've had this cross-hair gaming fetish since I played Xevious and Cabal on my NES as a kid.

HoD III isn't that bad with a stock controller. the Madcatz "green and ugly" gun got decent notices from what i recall. never used it myself though.

Dead Aim's pretty decent actually; it's better than Capcom's first GC2 flop, Dino Stalker (which is OK for playing one time, and that's it). It's a lot better than RE: Survivor on the PS1, and during the cruise ship part of the game, it felt kinda like HOTD, except now you have control of where to walk. If you find it cheap, you should pick it up. It's probably even more satisfying to RE fans.

pence: I used to be a huge light gun fan before I really got into shmups. To make it simple, the best home light gun game is Time Crisis 3 on the PS2, which is basically a port of the arcade game and a new game exclusive on PS2. My second fave light gun game of all time is on the SNES: Metal Combat: Falcon’s Revenge. It’s the sequel to Battleclash and just amazing…horribly underappreciated.

I third Elemental Gearbolt. Also, anybody remember that arcade game Chiller? Pure-fucking-genius! I've never shot stone walls and the already dead (not to be confused with the undead from other games) harder than that.

I'm still looking for Chiller on the NES :( Apparently there's a shitload of stuff that bypassed Nintendo's 8-bit era censors, like bloody people hanging on the wall and stuff.

I'm a plain man, it's either Virtua Cop or nothing. It has been a while since I have played it though, I'll have to drag Virtua Cop: Elite Edition out sometime and get practiced again.

"I third Elemental Gearbolt."

Which PS1 light gun do you use with this game? You can still view a good, although tiny, movie of it on www.workingdesigns.com .

From what I've gleaned from the PS1 forum at Gamefaqs, the Konami PS1 light gun, for use with the Lethal Enforcers double pack, is the rarest PS1 light gun. Stinks too, because you cannot use a controller for either game.

Anyone else love Area 51? I still remember playing that one back in college, and it remains my favorite light gun game to this day. I've read that you can use a PS1 controller for it. BTW, anyone here know which is the best home port of Area 51-the PS1, or the Saturn?

How are the PS1 Time Crisis games? I've only played 3 on the PS2, so I'm thinking that I'd probably be dissapointed in PS1 Time Crisis games.

Cheers fellas.

From what I can gather, the Guncon 2 needs to plug into a TV cable that has like a video in connector along it.

In Time Crisis though you need a pedal. Is there a button on the Guncon 2 that does the same job? What do most people do to play Time Crisis?

I would say the Point Blank games for PS, simply because they are the most addictive light-gun games I've played.

Has anybody used that wireless PS2 gun? It is compatible with all GunCon games, but I have never used nor do I know anybody who has.

It's pretty bloody. However, it's a third party game (the cartridge is weirdly shaped and grey) and it doesn't possess the Nintendo Seal of Approval (meaning that Nintendo's censors never looked at it). Sort've of like the Color Dreams (blue cartridge) games.

99Pence, there is a button on the Guncon2 that has the same function as the arcade pedal. It works so well, in fact, that you literally don't even miss the pedal. And the Guncon2 is very easy to hook up to a TV, provided your TV has AV jacks.

Dave: You can use the original Guncon on Elemental Gearbolt. The Guncon 2, however, does not work with any PS1 games (only PS2).

I wouldn't say that the Konami Justifier is rare or anything, there are a lot of other third-party guns that are hard to find, like the Desert Eagle gun and others. Crypt Killer, the Lethal Enforcers games, Area 51and Maximum Force used tthe Justifier.

Dead Aim took everything that was annoying about the old Biohazard games (dull combat, overemphasis on ammo management, crap ribbon savegame system, long and drawn out levels, poor pacing, obtuse puzzles) and threw it all away in favor of a brief well-paced story full of action and great combat, that you can play through again and again anytime you like.

Well before RE4 came out, Dead Aim was the Resident Evil game for people who don't like to play old Resident Evil games. Just don't try playing it with a friggin' mouse (like some people I know). GunCon 2 or nothing, preferably on a nice large screen with the lights out...

Yes either Composite RCA or Component Video will work. The accuracy using Component Video is the best. Important warning: S-Video will not work at all, without some rare out-of-print adapter.

Thanks.

I'll be using RGB SCART and I think I might already have a lead that should work. Hopefully.

I've honestly never played the PS1 ver of Area 51 with the Justifier, Dave :) I do know, however, that the Guncon does not work with Area 51, but it does work with Midway's other game, Maximum Force.

anyone played Resident Evi: Gun Survivor 2? saw this in the arcades ( , yes in my hometown, its a movie theater. they had one shooter, looked like Zero Gunner 2, but without rotating turret control, but it is gone now) and at the very least it (RE: GS) looked interesting.
