Colour level adjustment RGB

Hi Everyone,

I am a major noob when it comes to TVs and RGB in general.

I have recently acquired an old Sony Trinitron Wega TV - KD32DX40AS. When connecting through RGB there seems to be too much Green on the screen.

I thought that it may be my cable, however I tested it on a Sony PVM that I own and the picture is perfect (the cable uses csync - I'm not sure if that means anything)

So I thought that it may be a problem with the TV screen in general - but connecting RCA cables and the colour is fine.

I tried to take a photo to show what is going on but the difference in colour just doesn't really show in the photos as it is very subtle.

Obviously I want to use the RGB on the TV, but have not been able to figure out how to adjust the colour levels at all. I found a service manual online,

following that I was able to access the service menu - but from there I didn't really change anything because I had no idea what I was doing! I'm not even sure if the service menu allows you to change the colour levels or if you need to actually open the TV (I know that I have seen some old units that use potentiometers to adjust colour levels).

I'm willing to open the TV up and change things, however if I opened it now I wouldn't even know what to look for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm very lost at this point. Thanks

Which RGB (RGBS,RGBHV,RGsB) you use?

Can you post a Pic of the screen with too much green? Seeing what we're dealing with might help diagnose the issue better.

Also, what is the source of the RGB? The issues differ depending on the console.


From memory, most of the color adjustments on a Sony Trinitron are for NTSC or Pal color only (I.e for stuff connected through RF, composite or Svideo). In RGB mode, most color adjustments do nothing.

In the service menu, you can try adjust the green gain to see if it changes anything in RGB mode. Just make a note of settings before you change anything.

You should also check the pins on the scart port. A loose connection or dry joint can mess with the color. Too much green might mean an issue with the red pins.

On euro tv's I have seen similar issues with RGB where to me the colors looked more dry and less colorful than with other connections, even on Sony sets. I use RGB via component + an encoder on my American consumer tv's and as a result I can alter colors via the service menu settings, but I always wondered what others using RGB directly would do if the colors appear dry (which seems to be the issue with cheem201's tv), is there anything that can be done at all?

On the flipside I guess colors are also a subjective thing, maybe some like it better more vivid and colorful and others might think a bit more desaturated looks better. Problem is like in this case when you have two monitors giving you different unalterable colors...

You should be able to adjust these settings in the service menu to adjust the color.

Offset-R - My older Sony uses the term "RCUT" and "GCUT" so I assume this is the same thing?

G-Drive - Try turning this setting down first to see if it helps.
B-Drive

Make sure you write down the default values first in case you screw up something!

Have you tried the other input connections to make sure they look similar? The onboard color adjustments are normally to make small tweaks, not completely remove a color.

Alright, I tried adjust the R-offset, G-offset. Neither had any affect.

I did however adjust the R-drive, G-drive, B-drive. This did something and I have the colour closer now to how it probably should look.

That being said - I took photos AFTER adjust the colour, and this is the best that I can get it.

This is the title screen of kingdom hearts on PS2 as that seems to be the best example I can find because of the white background and blue heart.

By the way - the RGB in the photo looks great haha.... in real life it is soooo much darker and less vibrant than the rca. And the RCA looks white, not thta purpleish colour. It's hard to get accurate pictures

Does your TV have S-Video input? I'd bet it would give you the best of both worlds, the vibrancy you get via composite and almost the same clarity that RGB has.

Is it just the PS2 you are having this problem with? Have you got it set to progressive output? The PS2 forces sync on green when using progressive output which causes a green tint on TVs that can't support SoG.

Or even better he could use RGB scart into a component converter box and still use RGB but with the benefits of being able to tweak the colors the way he wants.
