Ai Cho Aniki - a perfect game in disguise?

Post by awbacon »

I did a video on Ai Cho Aniki for my “odd” game series, but I’ve always wondered why this game gets relegated to the “shit game” or “crap game” categories in japan.

I think it’s an almost perfect experience ; great music, weird setting, competent shooting mechanics, some weird mix in of fighting game controls. Totally does it for me.

Figured you guys would want to check it out. Who else has played Ai Cho Aniki? I’m curious if I’m the only one who’s into it haha

The only one I've played was the one on the wii virtual console - I believe it as the first one, a PC engine game?? Well whatever it was I must admit I had a blast. Basic but satisfying shooting + industrial strength silliness is a winning formula I guess !

Really? I’d say the exact opposite lol

I’m curious why you like the original better?

I have a hard time taking seriously any shmups that requires fighting game-style button combinations. I don't think I'm alone in that. Hell, some folks don't take shmups that use more than two buttons seriously.

I haven't played a ton of Ai Cho Aniki but I remember the hitbox being weird.

I like the music a lot. So many PCE shooters are pedestrian, so Ai's creativity can be appreciated. But a huge vertical hitbox combined with motion-based inputs form a major barrier to enjoyment.

Still, watching the video kind of made me feel like playing through again...

The hit box is definitely giant but I’ve learned to deal. Since the spin move makes you invincible to bullets it seems only “fair” your hit box is bigger than the characters core

It didn't take me too long to find a perfect score for this one on YouTube. They seemed to really like the fighting style moves too. The music is awesome too. I should probably get on this one soon.
