Can't get Audio Authority vga-component transcoder to work

Post by Brad251 »

I bought a used Audio Authority vga to component transcoder off Ebay and can't get it to display an image on my Samsung LCD TV. It isn't the 9a60/a version; it's older. The seller said she got it from an estate sale. It didn't come with a power supply so I bought one (12V, 1A, center negative, Triad brand). I'm using a Radeon hd 7750 which supports vga over dvi and I have an adapter. The adapter works fine when I run VGA to my monitor and I can also display HDMI on my TV from my PC at the same time. However, I will have HDMI running on my TV and as soon as I plug the vga cable into the transcoder, the HDMI signal is lost and there is no signal over component from the transcoder on my Samsung LCD. For some reason I can't run two displays at the same time while using the transcoder. I have tried 480p, 720p and 1080i and none of those resolutions work over the transcoder.

Does any one have any tips?

What's your intended use for the transcoder? It's possible your PC is sending slightly off-standard timings that the TV isn't programmed to accept over the component input.

My 9A60 works great as a transcoder for 240p from my consoles and PC to a 15kHz TV. I've also used it to transcode 480p VGA from a Dreamcast to a HD Sony CRT.

My 9A60 works great as a transcoder for 240p from my consoles and PC to a 15kHz TV. I've also used it to transcode 480p VGA from a Dreamcast to a HD Sony CRT.
Ultimately, I want to play 240p/480i content on a 15kHz CRT. I haven't installed CRT emudriver in order to do that yet so I wanted to test out the transcoder on my LCD to make sure that it works before install CRT emudriver. If the timings are off, what timings do I use or how could I fix that? One thing that is strange is that my secondary PC display (LCD TV over HDMI) will lose the signal even when the power adapter isn't connected to the transcoder when I plug the VGA cable from my PC to my LCD.

I did open up the transcoder box and discovered that there is a corroded capacitor and there is a translucent white substance on some parts of the board. There might be some corrosion on a few of the traces. There is also rust on the outside of the vga input and on the metal where the screws go in. This could be the problem.

You get no picture when the DVI>VGA>AA chain is active alone ? or is the issue only when you try to run both displays at the same time ?
Not sure I got that.

tip that could be related, or not: if it's indeed a 9A60 there's a single potentiometer inside on the pcb, turn it clock/counterclock to adjust the horizontal position, and of course this affects sync as well. some people couldn't get a picture on their flat panel until they've fiddled with it.

PS: corroded components doesn't sound good...

I was able to get a picture when connecting to my SD CRT but the picture was flickering whenever I selected "enable edid" in VM maker.. I did set the monitor preset to "generic 15.7 kHz" so the picture being output to my CRT should have been 15 kHz. I followed all the instructions on the geedorah website. Using switchres in Retroarch, I got the same flickering.

I got unstable picture on my CRT as well, so I had to put an Extron RGB in the chain between my PC and 9A60 to clean up the sync. But you should try to clean up the corrosion and maybe replace that capacitor, even if it isn't the source of your issues
