Between the two, I'd go with the Hotrod. It uses Happ parts, which are better than the xarcade parts.

To see what's out there, you should check out these reviews:

Another option would be to get something like a Tekken 5 stick and use an adaptor, but it would only be for 1 player. I think you can get them new for $70 (includes tekken 5 for ps2).

Get a Joy Box. It's $20 and let's you plug in any PS2, DC, and Saturn compatible controller. I use my Saturn pad and it's perfect, mame gets a lot more play time now. Since there's 3 ports you can have two players use it, provided you configure the settings. Otherwise, you just plug it in to the USB and you're good to go.

I use an adaptor for Cube controllers and connect a hori soul calibur 2 stick to it (without the actual SC2 theme btw)... works for me...

Keep in mind that the Hotrod doesn't have the ability to remap keys, so you're stuck with the setup listed on that page. Personally, I use an X-arcade, which is great because I can map Z, X, and C to buttons 1, 2, and 3 for use with nearly every PC shooter.

As for the Hotrod and Happ's parts. Yep, though they use Supers, so you'll probably want to replace them anyway.

Does anyone uses a PS2>USB port, uses MAME with fighting games ?

I use it, but I use a Dualshock contrroler, and it SUCKS. Its a pain to make special moves.

I ask that because I've been thinking about getting an PS2 arcade controller, and I want to use it with mame, but I wonder if this bad controls are because of the adaptor or it just the dualshock that sucks.

I have the tekken 5 stick and an adaptor. I like it. I've played a lot of street fighter alpha 3.

I use an Xbox 360 USB controller. And it works great. Although I haven't figured out how to map the D-pad yet, but the analog sticks placement makes up for it.

I'm using a PS2 Saturn pad via Joybox.

Perfect.

I've given up fighting games on MAME. It is really, really frustrating to go from a 97% insta-shoryuken execution rate in the arcade/living room to 18% on MAME. I can barely stand the 75% success rate I enjoy on XBL.

I was interested in getting the Hori DOA4 Arcade Stick. Is this good to play on MAME?

I do - and I perform a lot better than I do in the arcades. This is down to how used to the controller I am and all the time spent practising at home with it, not whether one device SUCKS over another.

EDIT: since switching from my crappy Logic 3 pad to the dualshock, I have been having some sort of signal problem - If I'm using the beam in DoDon, it will 'cut out' despite me still holding the button. Maybe the Dualshocks are a bit crappy - or it could be the USB adapter.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

It works, and so far my friend who got it has no complaints. Pretty good for a compact USB arcade stick.

What's the big deal with configurable joysticks anyway? You can change configurations software-side with MAME.

Seems to have issues with any 6-button games requiring simultaneous 5th and 6th button presses:

I'm personally uncomfortable using the Shift and Ctrl keys in games. ...come to think of it, many emulators don't support those two...

Either way, like I said earlier, many PC shooters default to ZXC, and some can't be changed.

Oh...and using the number keys for directions? No, thank you. Helluva lot easier to navigate in Mame frontends with the direction keys.

I'm not sure what you mean... but then again I don't use a frontend.

What I'm talking about is going into the key mapping .ini file with a text editor, and adding in your | JOYCODE_1_BUTTON1 or whatever it is. Just pointing out that hardware configurability in the X-Arcade isn't really such an advantage if all it takes is a text editor and you can get the mapping you like with a HotRod or any other control setup.

The Sega Virtua Stick for PC that I ordered from PA has now arrived, and I must say I'm very pleased with it.

You wouldn't be able to use it on Kaiser Knuckle, since this game has 5 different strengths each for punch and kick. You hit 5 and 6 together to get the L5 Kick attacks.

I'm hoping that XBCD 360 driver mentioned in the comment section helps with this problem. The DOA4 stick is great for Neo-Geo titles in MAME. Buttons 4/1/2/3 are lined up just perfectly for the typical MVS layout.

It will work at least in MAME32 GUI versions. On the controllers tab, check the "enable joystick input" box. In the controller ID layout boxes, select the appropriate ID for "P1" to configure it as Player 1.

It's alright with fighting games, but the D-Pad is good for shmups. In DoDonPachi, I'm able to move the smallest cetermeter with a PS2 D-Pad. The D-Pad is great, but the flaw is that in certain shmups, if your ship moves slow, it'll hurt your thumb after awhile. Like in Raiden when the ship moves slow, I just use the joystick. I want to get a Saturn>USB port device, but I'm too lazy and my PS2 controller is doing the job well (it's good for FPSs).
