Do you play with a vertical 144hz monitor? are 27" vertical

Post by jamesbowers »

Hi, I would like to use an 144hz freeesync/gsync compatible monitor just to play Shmups on PC. I would prefer to have just 24"/ 1080p screen... but most 1080p panels are 27" I think it might be VERY big in vertical mode.... I have no idea how it feels in game. So what do you use?

1) I dunno where you're looking, there are a whole bunch of free/gsync 24 inch 1080p 144hz screens on Amazon, etc

2) Is there any point in 144 for this? Are there any shmups where that would even matter? You might have more size options if you broaden your search to include stuff that maxes out at 75 or whatever.

Yes, even if the game is locked to 60fps, you can turn off vsync and force a 144hz refresh rate, it'll lower the input lag and screen tearing won't be noticable at the higher refresh rate.

Depends how big your room is, I've got my 27" 1080p panel on one of those arms so I can rotate it but I don't bother as my room is canny small, I can't really push my chair back far enough for it to be comfortable/worth the bother.
I just play everything landscape and it's plenty big enough for me.

I'm using a 27 inch 144hz monitor for vertical shmups. It was a very good investment.

1) 1st in terms of lower input lag
2) Freesync: if you emulate older arcade games you can match the exact refresh rate of these games running them on original speed
3) Black Frame Insertion: Giving you motion blur reduction for a more crt like effect by inserting a black frame after each rendered picture. This feature can be combined with Freesync, if you use groovymame and have a crt-emudriver (special graphics driver for groovymame) compatible card

In terms of the screen being too big...I think it depends on what you play
If you have a 27inch lcd it matches a 20-21inch 4:3 crt very closely in terms of screen size.
Most old japanese candy cabs have a screen size of 29inch. (4:3)
Modern cabs even (vewlix) come with a 32 inch screen (16:9)
I think most games are in fact optimized for these kind of screen sizes, if they were developed for the arcade.

But yeah i think opinions are split in terms of screen size. Some people say they have more overview on a smaller screen and they can play better. For games like strikers 1945 ii, at least for me, I'd love to have a bigger screen than 27 inch, after I've played it in the arcade.
Maybe I find a good 32 inch screen one day, but sadly most of them come with curvature...

Because of the inferior motion perception and somewhat more fatigue-inducing LED light, I feel it's better to choose slightly smaller sizes.
If a 32" in portrait has nearly the same 3:4 size as a Japanese cab's CRT viewable picture, it doesn't mean it's the same viewing comfort.
Also the bigger the more obvious the weaknesses of upscaling filters and such.

27" is a fine sweet spot for several types of room/desk arrangements.
If you're planning to sit a bit further than you would in front of a CRT though, it's okay to pick a larger display.
(or if you stay in landscape for 'yoko' of course, that's also a good reson for picking a 32" or 42~43")

@OP: on a desk, sitting the same distance you do when working (keyboard position) it's true that 27" will look big in portrait, but fine if you lean back on the chair with the arcade stick on your lap for instance. Otherwise yeah 24" might be better.

PS/note: more and more hardware and emulation-related threads in the shmups chat section when they should be in hardware. what happen ?
