PSP rRootage ver0.4 -- what are your best scores?...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Ever since some coders managed to bring a PSP port of Kenta Cho's classic PC douijin shmup freeware, rRootage, it remains at ver0.4 and what a masterpiece it is running on 1.50 firmware PSPs (especially the fact that it's completely portable).

On Stage 1A-1 with Normal Mode setting, I was trying to see if I could do a 1CC run with "no bomb" but found out that in some very critical situations (like the fourth loop, the scattershot is simply too much -- I had to use two bombs to save my ass from what would've been a perfect 1CC "no bomb" run of 1A-1 PSP rRootage). I had seven lives in reserve upon the start of the 4th loop of 1A-1 stage with 3 bombs in reserve limit. I used two bombs on 4th loop of 1A-1 and finally completed the 4th loop with a whopping 8 lives and 1 bomb remaining with an overall score of 2,501,700 points. Had I not used those two bombs on the 4th loop of 1A-1, then my overall score would've have been, indeed, higher.

Here are my top scores for PSP rRootage ver0.4 on "Normal Mode" setting with "Completed Stage" rankings:

Stage 1A-1 -- 2,501,700 points 1CC with 1 bomb in reserve

Stage 1B-1 -- 2,355,840 points

Stage 1C-1 -- 1,853,350 points

Stage 1R-1 -- 1,830,610 points

Stage 2A-1 -- 1,564,920 points

Stage 2B-1 -- 1,883,140 points

Stage 2C-1 -- 1,607,960 points

Stage 2R-1 -- 1,476,090 points

Stage 3A-1 -- 1,577,780 points

Stage 3B-1 -- 1,729,920 points

Stage 3C-1 -- 1,557,570 points

Stage 3R-1 -- 1,479,980 points

Stage 4A-1 -- 1,427,440 points

Stage 4B-1 -- 1,462,830 points

Stage 4C-1 -- 1,622,380 points

Stage 4R-1 -- 1,372,700 points

Stage 5B-1 -- 1,467,350 points

This is definitely fantastic, but I really wish they'd update it with a TATE option.

Don't know if I have any scores worth posting ... I'll check later.

4-19-06, I did a 1CC clear with no bomb on 1A-1 PSP rR...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Last night on 4-19-06, I thought I'd see if I could do a 1CC (One Credit Clear) with "no bomb" on Stage 1A-1 "Normal Mode" of PSP rRootage ver0.4. It is possible! (Although due to the small size of the PSP's letterbox LCD-type screen, it's nevertheless possible.) The fourth loop was the most challenging portion of this particular stage. I got a "Stage Complete" ranking with 8 lives in reserve with 3 bombs maximum with an overall score of 2,852,780 points. All this was done using the PSP's analog knob controller and not the D-pad...an impressive feat in itself.

Actually, the framerate of the PSP running PSP port of rRootage ver0.4 seems to maintain a consistant pace on the Normal Mode setting of Stage 1A-1 (of course, keep in mind that the PSP's CPU is already running at an overclocked 333 mHz speed and not the stock 222 mHz speed when running UMD software and/or videos). All this at the expense of shorter PSP battery life. A higher capacity PSP battery would obviously would be the answer to running PSP homebrew & emulation at a consistent 333 mHz speed or have it continuiously plugged into an A/C voltage line using the supplied PSP A/C adapter.

Of course, the "law of diminishing returns" applies to shmup and other genre video game high scores (that place emphasis on high scoring). How so might one ask? Well, if one gets high enough high score, the next time it will be more difficult to match or best it on future serious shmup gaming sessions. Hence more times often than not, one will not be able to reach his or her highest score and screw up big time.

------------------------
The only factor is to beat your highest score is the only incentive to try to beat your current highest score.
------------------------

Ace video game players who are "in the zone", say that nothing the arcade game CPU could throw at them (i.e. -- more enemies on screen, ramping up difficulty, more bullets onscreen, etc.) could distract them from achieveing the highest score. Sometimes, it's "mind over matter" that usually prevails that does the trick of giving the player that extra boost of confidence to achieve his or her highest score on a video game.

A Tate'd version of PSP rRootage would indeed be awesome. Not only would the player have the advantage of a longer playing field, he or she could assess the playing field filled with insane amounts of scattershot to his or her advantage in order to maximize higher scores.
