HDMI switcher trouble

Post by unstablewarpfield »

Hey guys,

I have an LG LED tv connected to a Yamaha receiver. Both devices posses ARC and CEC possibilities which work perfectly. Watching TV or blu-rays has never been a problem.

For convenience I'd like to connect all my mini consoles to one hdmi input. I wanted to do this through an hdmi switch, so I bought a 5x1 hdmi switch. I first tried connecting the switch to an input on my receiver. It works, but there is one quirk. When I have broadcast tv on sound is running via ARC HDMI to my receiver. No problems, but as soon as I connect my little hdmi switch it loses ARC and sound comes through the TV speakers. :?

I thought it might have been something with my receiver so I tried the exact same thing with a free hdmi port on my tv. Same thing happens... as soon as I connect my switch, audio on ARC to my receiver stops. When I unplug the switch it comes back again.

Might be worth mentioning that I do get audio from my mini consoles over my receiver. It's just that ARC for live broadcasts to the receiver stops working with the switch connected.

I have enough hdmi ports on my tv and receiver to plug in all my devices, but wanted to have everything neatly on one automatic switch so there is no fiddling around with multiple remotes or finding inputs all the time.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

This is the switch I bought.

Ok, so I have narrowed the problem down to my C64 mini. Only when this is plugged into the switch I lose live tv audio on 5.1 through my receiver. When I switch the commodore on and I move to the appropriate input on the tv so I get it's image I do get sound through my 5.1 speakerset from the C64 mini. When I switch back to live tv at that point after 5 seconds or so the sound switches from 5.1 to the tv speaker. If I unplug theC64 mini sound gets back from tv speakers to 5.1 on my receiver. I'm confused haha... Guess I'll search around a bit on the web concerning this (kind of specific) problem. It might be worth mentioning that I have none of these problems with my nes and snes mini, my nintendo switch or my laptop.

As usual... if anyone knows anything... Let me know.

Ok... to close this down with... Apparently the C64 mini has some CEC and ARC issues on its hdmi connector. The only way to currently get around it is to physically block pin 13 on the hdmi connector with a "CEC-killer" dongle, or blocking pin 13 in some other way. (an older CEC-less cable would probably also work). Found a couple of forums that state this is a problem that could be dealt with in a future software update. Would be nice...

Anyways, I ordered one of these plugs and will see if it does the trick. Quite confident it will. :)

The CEC killer dongle works well for my setup where my TV kept renaming my gaming port.

For some reason with CEC enabled it kept copying the name of my receiver and applying it to the gaming port so I couldn't tell them apart.
