Papercrafts are superior

Post by infested_ysy »

Dear people of shmups forum,

Do you make/like papercrafts?
Image

I think they're superior, though potentially a waste of ink. But what the hell, these cats are cute enough for me to ignore that aspect.

While it may not look like it, but these cute cats are vicious animals. Just look at what they did when I left my room for a few hours:

OMG THEY MURDERED MY MODEL KITS! WRYYYYYY!!!

there's 12 different cats in total, and you can print the templates out for yourselves here:

Maybe it's not what one calls "papercraft," but when I was more of a math dork than a general dork, I used to like making polyhedra. The only really complicated one I did was a great icosahedron. I worked on it sporadically for about 2 years, probably over 100 hours in all, starting with the stellation pattern and a calculator. After that, I decided that it would be good to use something more permanent than paper for that sort of project, and I haven't bothered trying since. It looks a little ragged now, but making 10 & 12 skinny wedges line up together is a pain in the ass.

That polyhedral is very impressive, did you design it yourself or make it from another inspirational source? totally beyond any paper thing I could do.

Nice Vic Viper there.

It's a well-known mathematical entity discovered/invented a few hundred years ago by either Kepler or Laplace, I think. I first encountered the thing in a book at a library maybe 8 years ago. So no, no freaking way I designed the thing, I just saw some pictures and wanted to make one.

I used to have a nifty VRML animation showing how this and a couple other stellations relate to the usual convex icosahedron. In short, the 12 outer points are the vertices -- the rest of the intersections are face crossings, so they don't count -- and there are 20 big equilateral triangles stretching between those vertices. There are 50-something other similar configurations that come from the icosahedron, a few from the dodecahedron, and one from the octahedron. Stellation patterns define the allowable face shapes.

Intuitively, stellation consists of stretching the faces outward until they cross each other, which tends to make star-like patterns (hence the word). First stellations aren't that hard to visualize, but higher ones are.

superior to ... erm... regular craft or something...

anyway: there is a nice thread on the same subject here. It used to be about 12 pages long, but their forums crashed last week and there is nothing left of it. Has some nice links though... the Advance Wars figures and the Celda fones are amazing in my humble opinion.

Papercraft always fools me into thinking this is something I could actually do with regular paper and a color printer. Fact is it always comes out like flimsy crap. I believe you need some sort of thick card-stock, and a printer that can print on the stuff. Anyone have tips in this area?

Kiken told me to repost this :? Though it's in this thread as well!

I have actually been pondering making my own papercraft model... well, not really my own original, but one I wanted to do anyway :) It just sucks that I have a really poor concept of 3D! :x so it's really a difficult task for me.

Not only does this belong in this thread, but this is lightyears ahead of any optical illusion I have ever seen. It is no mild illusion. It's seriously like seeing a wooden doll jump up and start dancing before your eyes.

Here it is:

Click on the bold "download" for a .pdf of the paper model. If you watch the video, it is almost identical to what you will see. Freaky cool! :D

Are there any papercraft links to build such cool Japanese arcade cabinets?

I do recall of the retro 1980's arcade cabinet papercraft "Paper Arcade" hosted on "way of the rodent" site some time back...even has plans to build such a cool change/token booth as well for a complete retro American arcade hangout diorama. ^_~

http://wayoftherodent.com/pa/pa_staff.htm

I did make a Ms. Pac-Man papercraft cabinet -- it was fun to make...

Here's a YouTube vid someone posted of the Paper Arcade in a diorama setting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--pATW7zeNc

Here's a arcade cabinet papercraft for the PSP: http://gizmodo.com/369569/flatpack-card ... ng-awesome

I've always been a fan of the no cutting rule in origami.

My favorite books are by Tomoko Fuse. She does lots of cool polyhedra and boxes.
