SHMUPs in general is an expensive Genre... because of course, most the great/good ones are always Imports.bwod1e wrote:yah can get psyvariar for 240$ US for the gnet card and motherboard

I think that playtesting all shmups in mame will severely lower you're enjoyment / appreciation of them, you really need to revisit them for prolonged periods of time and not overdo it with trying to check out tons of shooters. some games that you may not think much of now you might end up playing in a year and totally enjoying.
also, viper phase 1 plug, awesome game.

dont worry kemical, im very aware of that
while im a big fan of MAME for getting an idea of games, i am completely aware how far it can throw you from how the real game plays on an arcade machine
i have around 35 classic pcbs and the good percentage off them are crap on mame in comparison
people dont realise how far wrong the emulation for some games are compared to being played on their original platform.
im totaly in love with DDP and Progear because of advice on here and a quick go on mame...
looking forward to playing some of the more later games on DC before i go burning more cash

Pink sweets is colorful.. just drop 2k on the PCB kit and your done..
Technically soukyugurentai for STV is fantastic. I don't think its very expensive either. Its colorful, high res and smooth as silk.
I think you should try out ESPra.de from Cave.
If your a newby try out Battle Bakraid, as its quite simple to beat compared to all the others. Not that I 1cc it or anything like that
Nebulasray might be worth a look.
Dragon Blaze
If you really want bullets, ESP galuda, Ketsui, Dodonpachi Dai ou jou... can't go wrong with those. But Dodonpachi is excellent too as you've found out, just has lots of slowdown.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I think it's all about finding the style of shmup that feels the most 'you'. For example, I've never really liked Gradius, but it has many passionate fans. My own favourites are the Cave games, particularly ESPrade, ESPgaluda and Guwange. I also love Ikaruga, and that's cheap to try if you pick up the DC or GC version. It really does look beautiful on a NAOMI cab though...
MAME has its uses. For a lot of people it's vital because there's no other way they would ever get to try the games - it was Donpachi that got me into tate shmups - but as many people have said, it's important not to go bananas and d/l every game ever made, and then just dip into them for one credit each before moving onto the next.
Do try ESPrade, partly because it's my favourite game, but also because the system is fairly simple and it's quite easy to get into.

I'd recommend going to this superplay site and download some videos. Easier than getting roms to work, plus you can see non-emulated stuff in motion, plus you get to see the games they were meant to be played. If you want bright futuristic bullet filled verticals, try all of the Cave games. DoDonPachi DOJ, ESPrade, Guwange (its not futuristic, the opposite really, but you can't not like this game) and ESPGaluda are your best bets.

Dangun Feveron is a beast. you mentioned addictive difficulty, and this game has it in spades.
i know you already tried it but i would suggest putting a bit more time into Batrider. raizing games always make room for improvement, you could very well be playing this forever. and you're looking for great difficulty and nice enemy design? check and check.

Another vote for the fantastic, unique Dangun Feveron. Not only is this game addictive, not only is it colourful, not only is it modern, and not only is it well-designed -- it's also hilarious
The first time I ever saw the 'dancing disco women' bomb is one of my all-time videogaming moments, and as for the pseudo-disco soundtrack -- well, it has to be played to be believed

I'd highly suggest a Dreamcast, you won't be disappointed (especially for the price). Ikaruga on a tate VGA is just... amazing. Also, you gain easy access to games like Border Down, Zero Gunner 2, Psivariar 2 and Under Defeat (the ones with the most modern feel IMHO). Not counting the small hitbox and massive amounts of bullets, Mars Matrix actually has kind of an older feel to it. It's the 2D graphics I think ;P
The Dreamcast hardware is based on the naomi board isn't it? That's part of why it's ports are so nice, things convert super easy. Guilty Gear X on the DC is the closest to arcade perfect you'll get for that game. Heck, even the sound effects on DC GGX are crisper than PS2 GGXX =D

The PGM system is "DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm".bwod1e wrote:if i want to get a copy of DDP without the lag
what do i need to do.. what version do i buy
as far as purchasing a arcade pcb i mean
also i see bee storm is so damn cheap, can get the cart only for around 40 - 50 US
is it worth getting it and the pgm system?

It's regarded by most to be pretty piss-poor compared to the others in the series. DDP2 wasn't developed by Cave, and it shows.
DoDonPachi was on a standalone board:

Same with the origina, DonPachi:

There are PSX and Saturn ports of DDP if you want a cheap(er) way to get a hold of it.

If you want smooth, no slowdown DDP. Find the PlayStation port, and switch the Wait option to OFF. It actually run *smooth* than the PCB. i.e. no slowdown when the bullet pettern is dense. I think it costs around 7,000yen used.bwod1e wrote:if i want to get a copy of DDP without the lag

As mensioned before in this thread. Bee Storm is not develop by Cave, and it's Taiwan developer IGS is not good at shmups. It actually is a below average game dispite IGS got access to the DDP source code (as it was said) when they develop Bee Storm. Try download the it's R** and you would see. Really? You thought it was that bad? It seemed pretty interesting when I tried it; granted if you were expecting something resembling DDP you'd probably be pretty disappointed.SAM wrote: As mensioned before in this thread.
