I got killed by a f'ing bee...

Post by jp »

So, for whatever reason, I decide to TATE the ole TV tonight and do some shmupping. And, once again for whatever reason, I decide to play Dodonpachi since theoretically I had only played it twice prior (once briefly a year ago on a friends Xbox and briefly the day I recieved it a week or so ago).

So... I go to play Saturn Mode (because I'm yet to encounter a game where "Saturn Mode" isn't better), and for some reason level 1 (or level 0, whichever) grabs my attention (I thought the lava was pretty). So I play and get to the boss of... level 4 I think (the boss that has the bitchin' guitar music rocking in the background) and it kills my remaing 2 ships (only play on 1 credit muhfuckas!).

Well, I decide to try again because I liked the music at the boss. And this time I make it past that boss and into level 5 before I run out of lives. I try again... and I make it into level 6 (I thought level 5 would be the final level, but no). So I play again and make it to the boss of level 6 and die. I think 'Hey, it would be the shizznit if I could 1CC this damn Cave game on my 5th try to ever play it), and so... I start up. This time, a 1UP appears on the big red ship in level... 3? 4? and I managed to beat the boss of level 6 with two lives and 1 bomb intact.

Now, I was getting ready to talk a whole gang of shit on here. The first thing that went through my mind as the screen went white and text started showing up was "Holy shit... I just 1CC'd a Cave game on my 5th try... I can hold this over anybody that ever whines about me not liking Cave... "

And then a giant bee appears. And then it kills me. I put up one hell of a fight though! I killed its legs and wings... but it still killed me. Sadness. No 1CC +1 for me. Stupid bee. Why I have to save the world from being sticky and sweet is beyond me.

At any rate, I will concede that, for the most part, I was wrong about DDP. I did find myself having a good time with the game and I felt the boss designs/music/levels were MUCH improved over my main dosage of Cave which was the infinitely shittier Donpachi. Mind you, I'm not a fan of Cave or anything, as other than DDP I only liked Pro-Gear and one other game I played on my friend's Xbox... the other 2 or 3 games I played didn't appeal to me at all.

One thing that did strike me while playing through DDP though was that it must have been a HUGE influence for Mars Matrix. A lot of the bullet patterns reminded me of Mars Matrix, and the last two levels were truly a tell tale sign of this. Hell, I'd go so far as to say that the last level of Mars Matrix is virtually a homage to the last level of DDP.

Anyways, there's my fun shmup-o story for the evening.

1. I thought you were going to tell us one of the bee items on the ground killed you

2. Saturn mode is far easier than Normal. :P A 1CC actually consists of beating both laps (not that I'd know anything about doing that ;) ). Still, I'd say beating the 1st 6 levels on a single credit is a good accomplishment regardless.

3. And Saturn mode is the reason you fought the bee boss... because it is something you usually have to earn after beating the 2nd lap.

The Gopher speaks the truth (I hafta ask, where else but here would you ever hear that phrase uttered?); Saturn Mode is a bit easier than Arcade mode is (when you leave everything on defaults), but it's still fun to play from time to time, if only to experience the extra stage at the beginning and that bugger bee boss at the end. As was said, on Arcade mode you hafta finish the second loop to get to him, and just qualifying for it is hard enough!

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game though. :)

The same place you'd hear people talking about a game called "Hotdog Storm" being an awesome game

Anywhere and else it would be "Sausage party" being a game to avoid playing at all costs.

Ah, well I don't feel so special anymore.

Guess I should see how many tries it takes to 1CC Arcade mode eh? Might as well, I won't be killing that bee anytime soon.

And to clarify, the "talk a gang of shit" comment was noted in a light hearted "haha" way, just making sure I straighten that out before people start jumping up my ass about it and this becomes a 3 page flame jp fest.

Actually, I've got to confess two things: firstly, that I haven't played the Saturn version (only the arcade version); and secondly, that because of this and my ignorance of the Saturn version, I was about ready to post a scathing reply accusing you of talking complete BS :D

All I can say is: Don't expect to have quite such an easy ride 1CCing the arcade mode/version. ;)

I like the lava stage too.

Didn't know that Saturn mode was easier, interesting. Been awhile since I played the game. Too sidetracked by Mushi still, not to mention Rajirugi and Gradius Gaiden.

edit: btw, glad to hear u have softened your stance on Cave a bit. Agreed that MM was nicely DDP inspired. The small honeycomb grid thrown into stage 1 is a giveaway too (and some of GW's bullets look just like DDP's). IIRC there is at least one Cave (or former Toaplan) employee at Takumi.

Heh, the final bee boss is like the only hard part in the arrange mode. Good luck even getting to it (as the second loop final boss) in arcade mode... I've never even been able to satisfy the requirements to get in the 2nd loop.

I think I heard someone say that there,s a boss after the Queen bee somewhere on this forum sometime. Can someone tell what this boss is like? Is it another colerful battle vehicle like the rest of the bosses?

One of these days I'm gonna get up to Hibachi and create a savestate there so that I can practice fighting him.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Um, well, the first encounter with the Q-Bee involves a face off with its exoskeleton. After that, you fight the real thing, and boy - is it nuts.

I'm not sure on whether direct image linking from the main site is appropriate, but, you can see the final boss here: http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/rev ... alboss.htm
Approach your target and attack! Your mission starts now! ARE YOU READY!?
