Also from the R-type series:

R-Type Delta level 3 walker thing
R-Type Final level 3 battleship

both of these took the entire level to get around.

The level 2 mid-boss, level 4 mid-boss and level 5 final boss from Xenon 2 were 2-3 screens high each.

Gradius V's walker near the end of the game is another.

Some that come to mind:

-Twin Eagle's Carrier!

-Project 4 in Area 88/U.N. Squadron

-Raimei (Stage 2 boss) in 19XX

-Stage 3 (?) boss in Raystorm

-Shienryu's true last boss. (you have to scale out to see the whole bullet pattern!)

-D.A.S. in In The Hunt (You'd think it never ends)
Proscecutedt to the full extent of the JAM.

its evil sure, but its hardly big?? same size as the player sprite, maybe you mean gigawing 2..?
Methinks they might be referring to the Stage 6 boss...not the "final" one, heh heh.

Ehr? The final boss in Nexzr is a mech not that much bigger than your own ship. One of my favourite bossfights, though.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I know the final boss it's not gigantic, but it looks awesome. It's a giant Red Gundam.

I don't think it's really that big, but it looked AWESOMELY COOL for the time. Those colorful twisted lasers looked really cool.

Rayxamber III: final boss, massive and fills several screens. Although I thought this boss was pretty lame, didn't put up much of fight.

One of the stages in Thunder Cross (1 I think) is a single ship that launches a few enemies at you. Huge. It's not terribly dynamic, though.

Also, man, that mother%&*( at the end of King of the Monsters 2. Yeah, yeah, it's not a shump, and it's not multiple screens wide, but damn, when somebody says "huge" it springs right into my mind, especially considering this is a scrolling beat-em-up.
