Huh? Please explain. I don't see how this does anything boost knowledge of what's going on in the industry. Sounds more like you're just burned you can't get an E3 pass.dave4shmups wrote:What's killing the video game industry, at least in this country, are industry events that are expensive as hell to get into, or that aren't even open to the general public.

I edited my post, please go back and re-read. It does increase the connectivity between the players and the industry, rather then making things more exclusive. There's simply no good reason why an event like E3 shouldn't be open the general public, much more so game store employees.GaijinPunch wrote:Huh? Please explain. Yeah, I'm ticked that neither I, nor even game store managers, can get an E3 pass. Look at Japan, AFIK, you don't work for the industry, and yet you were able to go to this year's AOU. Industry events this year need to be more open. I can, and will, watch coverage of E3 on G4TV, but it's not the same as being there.

There's a great reason. Too many fucking people want to go. The place can barely handle w/ the limited amount of tickets they have. There's simply no good reason why an event like E3 shouldn't be open the general public, much more so game store employees.
AOU Show and AM Show only have one day (Sunday) that are open to the public. By contrast though, they are a fraction of the size of E3, or even the TGS for that matter. They're really easy to get press passes for though.... I'm usually just too lazy or decide to go to late to get one.

Don't get me wrong; I had an awesome time at the GDC this year. But I have parents who were willing to pay the expenses for the trip; not everyone is so blessed. And the thought that, perhaps some people weren't able to afford any of the passes, and thus may have missed out on the GDC because of that, really pisses me off. These types of industry events NEED to be more open; period.
Other than that, I agree with JP; with regards to collecting. I'm not a collector, but if I can't find a game I want, I'm not going to scapegoat anyone who does collect games. I'll just keep on looking, and, eventually, the game will turn up.
What? This thread just got more insane.
Shit like GDC does not need to be 'more open'. If anything it needs to be more closed. You know what happens when it becomes so open anyone can go, and they get lots of people who do? All the interesting shit moves to behind closed door, invite-only demos/presentations.
And if it continues it turns into crap like E3, which was overcrowded, full of near-porn-star attractions to 'get peoples attention'. Just the overcrowding hurts; if people in the press (you know, the people who inform the MILLIONS OF OTHERS who can't go to E3 about what is going on) can't get any decent playtime on the hot new console/game/whatever because of the long waits, their coverage suffers. Which isn't good for anyone.
GDC has done a fairly good job of keeping itself small and fairly low-key. I think they're going to start having problems with that now that E3 is harder to get into. I would not be surprised to see GDC enforce press+developer-only policies in the future.
I still fail to see how any of this is some sort of industry hurting phenomenon. There's plenty of ways publishers and developers get info and hands on experience to the general public; in ways that are MUCH MORE efficient than letting anyone into industry conventions. The inability of some register biscuit at EB to attend E3 means absolutely nothing, other than it makes the said biscuit whine.

No, this thread got insane with people whining about collectors. But, points well taken, Zakk. I dunno, I just would love to be able to go; like a friend of mine who's into comics, and went to a comics convention. But you're right, the press does have to have acess to the games.zakk wrote:dave4shmups wrote:What's hurting the gaming industry most, at least in this country, is the fact that major industry conventions are either expensive as hell to get into, or aren't open to the general public at all, like E3. I would hate to see GDC get more restrictive, because it has the largest career fair in the entire industry, and is a great place to network-even if you want to get into gaming journalism, like I do. Really, for people who want to work for Sony, Microsoft, etc, though, they might as well be able to go and interview with these companies, or talk to them, at one event instead of having to fly back and forth.
Whatever, sorry for throwing things off-track with ranting.

And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

Nope. Only took it out of the packaging once just to look at it. Now it remains boxed in a room at my parent's house. Along with 26 Saturns and other various Panzer Dragoon/NiGHTS items.

I know man, some guy is being restricted from enjoying the Xbox because I'm keeping an incredibly limited edition console in my "collection".

I whole heartedly disagree about the press getting to the games at E3.
The devcos should invite the press to their HQ for that shit. A show is a fucking show right?
How the hell are you supposed to write a review on a system or a game running on it with the level of noise in those places, its ridiculous.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
