Is Gunner's Heaven PS2 compatible?

Post by Ceph »

One of the first Playstation 1 games I ever got a long time ago in a galaxy far away was a Hong Kong bootleg of Gunner's Heaven (which I actually got in the same HK store that sold me my PS1 !). To my defense I'd like to add that I had no idea back then it was a bootleg (and that the nice Chinese storekeepers were selling nothing BUT bootlegs); only when I came to Japan a few days later I noticed that PS1 disks were black. :P

And since legit games are so much nicer than bootlegs, I finally hunted down a legit copy this week (better late then never, eh?). But my PS2 doesn't boot it. Is my PS2 (v7 I think) getting old or is the game incompatible?

Um... perhaps your PS2 can't play imports?

The game works fine on my modded NTSC U/C 39001. That makes it a V7 I believe...

However, if you are using a similar modchip, the bootup method for import PS1 games is a bit different.

With the PS2 in standby mode, press and hold the reset button for 2 seconds, then quickly press the reset button twice.
This only applies for certain modchips though.

I have a PAL PS2 with a DM3 mod chip (last available update flashed). With this mod-chip, to boot PS1 games circle needs to be pressed when switching on the console/resetting. I own over 50 Japanese PS1 games (non bootleg!), and most do work fine, but some don't.
For instance, I've just loaded "Oh! Bakyuuun" a lightgun shooter from 8ing/Raizing, made in the year 2000 and it runs fine. Horned Owl, an older lightgun game from 1995 refuses to load. Tekken 1 doesn't load, but Tekken 2, 3 and Soul Edge do. Toshinden 1 doesn't work but 2 does. Ridge Racer 1 does not work, but part 2-4 of the series load fine. The games that work do work every time, and those that don't, don't, no matter how often I try. The pattern here is that none of the very first PS1 games run.

So it's most likely not my PS2s fault but a mod-chip related incompatibility.

Damn!

Man, that really sucks, Ceph. I guess you're going to have to track down a Japanese PS1 or get a different mod chip. I feel for ya'. I always hate it when i put alot of time and trouble into trying to play a game but then something like that goes wrong.

You should have seen me trying to figure out how to get my Rockman Complete Works set to work with my mod chip on my PS1.

There's always ePSXe which runs Gunner's Heaven quite well as I remember.

Thanks for your kind words :D
I actually have a Japanese PS1 collecting dust in my parents place (hardly ever used, too), and since I'm visiting today I'll grab that.

While I prefer playing PS1 games with smooth textures, I surely don't intend to go through the hassle of installing a new mod-chip to the old PS2 just for those few games from 1995, especially with the PS3 coming out soon.
