Astebreed released on Switch today. Any impressions?

Post by Darkseed_5150 »

Anyone buy this yet? I'm ready to triple dip but I can't find any info regarding the framerate in handheld mode.
Why is this such a common issue for Switch ports. Are reviewers afraid to comment on performance?
I want to buy Black Bird but can't find any performance info even when I ask on this forum.
Too many times I've gotten burned with Switch ports like Slain or A Robot Named Fight which run horribly subpar in handheld mode, but then a game like Shikondo, which runs kinda slow on my PC and I thought would be a shit show on Switch lo and behold runs at a pretty steady 60 fps.

Anyway, I already missed the pre order discount on Astebreed just to err on the side of caution.
Any inpressions?

Well based on few minutes testing, it runs really smooth both handheld and docked, looks great too. I maybe noticed some small slowdown in docked in one busy part on first stage, but it was really minor and might be same in all versions of the game (no prior experience).

To me it feels more like 60fps than 30fps, but I can't say for sure, I'm not sensitive to this after a while.

I think Black Bird runs good handheld too, can't see any obvious issues with framerate in that one either.

btw. wasn't Slain patched for performance at some point? I have played it handheld, can't remember any huge issues there, but I bought it much later than initial release on Switch.

I think in general, 30fps is more common than 60fps, especially on Switch and handheld.

Thanks for the reply!
I dint mind a few dips here and there, as long as it's mostly 60.
In the case of Slain, I bought the game after the "60 fps patch" but that must've only been for docked mode as handheld mode runs very stuttery, like 40 fps or something.
I'm not trying to be a framerate snob or anything as I play some games that are 30 but I already own Astebreed on PS4 and PC so the main draw is playing in handheld. I don't mind the lower resolution or geometry but I can't deal with a constantly slow framerate when compared to other versions.

Took the plunge last night and... like I thought, it does indeed drop from 60 to 30 fps a lot of the time. This is in handheld mode which is the only way I play the switch and the only incentive I had to re buy this game.
Noticed a few dips which were not an issue during the intro mission but as soon as it hit the first stage with the water background and waves of enemies started hitting the framerate dropped to a constant 30 then back to 60. So far it seems to be at a ratio of 60/40 60fps/30fps. A seady 30, but still a bummer.
This was the last $20 worth of store credit I had on the eshop and will not be buying any more ports on the switch.
Pc/PS4 for me.

Didn’t note any dips and played through the entire story. I know I’m not very sensitive to those but very interesting you noticed it so severely. Still thought it played without a flaw.

Not every port is so bad on Switch. I played a lot of really good ports with constant 60 fps framerate. Still thanks for review.
