Anybody tried 8Tb external HDD?

Post by Nodoyuna »

I need to downsize the amount of hard drives I've collected through the years...
I already tried some 4Tb hard drives from Seagate and they seem to run OK
I'd like to make a step ahead and try 8Tb hard drives...
So, anybody have tried these?
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance

For what application?

Frankly, if you're looking at that much data, I'm hoping you've got it backed up somewhere. You're not going to want to shove all of it on one disk and then watch it fail and take all your data with it. I'd be looking at home/small-office NAS devices at that point, at least for the redundancy.

It would be mainly for backup purposes

I'm so used at using external HDD's that I haven't thought the NAS option...

Any specific reliable NAS for home use?

I personally would want something with at least 4 bays and Btrfs, but it really depends on your budget and what you want out of it. I'm sure many people would be satisfied with an old, repurposed PC running FreeNAS in a case with a boatload of drive bays.

I have two NAS machines running snapraid on ubuntu, had a few failures so far but haven't lost a single file yet.

They are machines I put together myself, I just looked for motherboards with embedded CPUs and a large number of SATA 2.0/3.0 controllers/ports
