Not getting sound on certain videos...

Post by dave4shmups »

I don't get the Windows "chime" when I turn on our PC anymore, and I certain videos on IGN (not Gamespot, for some reason) play without any sound. And gamevideos.com, which was just recently launced...well, on there, I get almost no sound! I'm afraid I may have *gulp* deleted something crucial to the sound on our PC when I was removing programs in the control panel.

Problem is, I don't know what. I don't know if adware or spyware could be the problem; a virus I have ruled out, due to the fact that we have Norton Antivirus which does recular scans, and the Windows Firewall.

I've always found good support there if I'm stricken with a problem.

Do you see a sound device in the device manager? Do you have a volume control icon in the taskbar? If you answered 'yes' to either of these questions, your sound device is functioning. If this is the case, check the obvious --

-make sure your speakers are plugged in and turned on.
-make sure sound is not muted in the volume control.

If you're getting sound on certain videos but not others, it's probably a codec issue. Hard to say which without knowing the videos involved. In this case, the lack of the Windows sound is unrelated -- it's probably just turned off in the sound control panel (and good riddance, too).

Everything's OK with the speakers, I can "hear" them even when not listening to a video. I wonder which codec as well; I do have the latest Divx one installed. Thanks for the note on the Windows sound; I didn't know that.

EDIT: This is strange-a video on IGN that I could not hear sound on...well, I just downloaded it, and there is sound! :?:
