Well, apparently they only owe like one million - that shouldn't be too big of a problem for a company that has cash cows like Megaman, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, and Devil May Cry.
Not too mention that if they did get in some major finacial trouble because of it one of the 1st party publishers would likely step in and help them back up. Capcom games draw alot of attention to the home systems.
Then again i know next to nothing about the way these things work so... it just seems unlikely to me that this will even put a dent in Capcom's wallet.
It's not like it could really cost them all that much to churn out all those admittedly cookie cutter sequels. Damn good cookie cutter sequels, though. That's alot of profit for a little bit of effort.
The article says the penalty is $10 million.. that's a fair bit, not to mention the potential for resignations and impact on their stock price.
We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
Capcom was the no.1 publisher during the last generation in terms of quantity of innovation. They just know how to get every last drop of milk from their cows, that's all.

I guess I missed all of their innovative games in the midst of Street Fighter 18. I've always been on the fence w/ Capcom since the mid-80's.

Capcom's got pretty good stuff. But they oughta stop milking their franchises to death. I mean, do we need 5+ Mega Man games a year? Quality is generally good for the first games, but then, it drops like a rock with all the recycling they do.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

I think they just have a way of dealing with the phenomenon of shelf life. Video game stores tend not to keep a game on shelf for longer than about half a year, in order to quickly cycle through every new release. If Capcom hadn´t rereleased their Street Fighter (and other series) games over and over again, the first parts would be sought-after rarities by now, and a lot less people would get to play Capcom games. Of course, Capcom would also have made a lot less money, but I really don´t get what´s so bad about rereleasing games. You don´t have to buy them, do you?
Mid 80's??? Had they even made Valgus at that point?

I think Valgus was 1984. Right before the mid 80s, but that's still a long time to be on the fence with Capcom, especially since the mid/late 80s was when they put out some of their better games.
