Megaman 3rd person/FPS fantasy that will never come true.

Post by JBC »

Ugh... having it all dark and serious would be so dumb i think. So don't think that's what i'm going to launch into here.

I actually fantasize about this Megaman idea alot though. I think i've been dreaming about a game like this since i was but a wee tyke, and with today's technology it would actually be possible.

My ideal version of a Megaman FPS would be sorta like this. Everything would look as detailed and realistic as possible - except for the characters. The characters would be cel-shaded, although very smoothly. They would have to look as flat as a real animation cel, except because they are actually 3d, but cel-shaded they wouldn't look like crap and the camera could spin around them without it looking like they where stuck in a 2 dimensional plane.

Now, at the same time the FPS mode would only be optional, but still fully realized. The main way to play the game would actually be a third person perspective - so that we could still keep an eye on our hero as he hops and dashes his way across those super cool looking detailed mechanical landscapes.

Now, another thing to help you visualize it the way i see it in my head is this. Normally in a Megaman game when you look at say, a microchip, the chip itself still looks big and cartoonish. In this game when you see something like a microchip it would be designed to look as real as possible, so it would be very detailed and small. This same rule would apply to everything in your surroundings. When you see an electrode - it would look like a real electrode. When you see a gigantic engine, it would be filled with all kinds of tiny working engine parts. When that anime/cartoonish looking ElecMan fires a bolt of lightning at your ass - it looks like real electricity.

Picture uh... Who framed Roger Rabbit? - except Mega Man and in a futuristic, cybernetic metropolis.

What would also be cool about this style of game is that you could make alot of the environments super-destructible. Now imagine your running around as Megaman and you encounter a met. The little cartoony met pops out from under his helmet and pops one straight into your arm. Megaman's arm cracks and bursts in a small section! There we have this cartoonish looking Megaman with a gash on his arm. Inside that gash though is an intricately detailed combination of moving robotic parts that look and reflect like real, well-oiled metal. So you collect an energy capsule and the wound heals itself with kind of a liquid metal effect. The cartoony flat shaded blue melts all over the wound and pop! Back to normal.

Now imagine that you fire your Mega Buster at say, a complex electrical array you would commonly find amongst some of the environments. All those tiny little pieces would shatter, bust, and fly out all over the place!

If this game where to be made you'd have to pick some good levels from the previous Megaman games to remake and remodel as to show off the ultra-realistic environments generated by this type of graphic style.

I would choose ElecMan first, as that would show off intricate details and have lots of nice, flashy lights all set against the backdrop of that beautiful dark blue sky we saw in the first game.

AirMan's stage from the second game would be a cool one to remake not only for some good old-fashioned platforming but also to show off some great cloud effects. You would actually be running around in the sky on this stage so you could imagine how awesome it would be to run in and out of giant, puffy clouds while fighting all those little bird hatchlings.

GutsMan's stage would be another excellent choice from the first game, exhibiting some great canyons and industrial areas. Not to mention fighting GutsMan at the end of the stage would be so awesome. Imagine the cartoonish Gutsman we all know and love launching ultra realistic chunks of rock at you! Rock that he rips straight out of the wall, or causes to tumble down at you from above. The dust effects on that alone would be worth playing through to it.

Now how about a GeminiMan stage? That beautiful, crystalline landscape under the stars leading into a highly reflective cavern filled to the brim with those weird energy bubble/egg things that are always blocking your path and just begging to be destroyed.

Among others - if you guys would like you can post your ideas for stages you'd like to see done in this style as well. I just think that having traditional looking Megaman anime style characters (like in the manuals) set over beautiful realistic environments like that would be ultimately awesome.

Whew... all that and i didn't even really get into my ideas for the actual gameplay or storyline yet...

Well, if you read all that then thank you for bearing with my childish fantasy of a Megman game that probably will never happen. But a man can dream... and it's okay with me if you don't like my idea. But that's just something i like to think about when i'm bored.

P.S. - Just imagine all the ENORMOUS, super destructible machines you could fight in Wily's Castle! Weeee!

EDIT - Oh, and by 'realistic' i don't mean 'photo-realistic'. I'm not saying that everything would look like you where watching a movie or something, but that it would look very 'solid' if you know what i mean. Kind of like some of the environments in say, Doom 3 or like the boss dragons in Magatama...

Yea, I always thought Mega Man would be great in a FPS style, if done correctly. I wouldn't want them turning it into Perfect Dark or something. I'd want Capcom to keep the same basic gameplay that's in the current games, maybe by using a lock-on firing system. The consumer would probably want the thing to have a million options and not be a one-player experience. I never had to worry about aiming in Mega Man before, I don't want to start that shit now.

Sounds like it would run on the P.N.03 engine.

I figured a lock on targeting system would be the default but the user would have the option of setting it on manual aim if they so desired - maybe something along the lines of Metroid Prime in that area - which may only work well or even apply to the first person mode...

I don't think multiplayer would be too bad since you have all those different robot masters to choose from, but only if it got equal representation on the development side of things. It most certainly wouldn't be set up like your average deathmatch style game though. Like, no one hit kills and things like that...

I think the 360 and PS3 are likely capable of generating the type of backgrounds i'm imagining here - and as far as the destructible environments go... anyone here ever play an Otogi game? Well, not that much destrcution as it would probably take up alot of the power needed to make the levels look solid but close.

If I bumped things because I typed them, you would never see my threads disappear now would you.

To be honest I suck at both FPS and Megaman.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.
