Ultracade UVC - faint wavy lines in picture

Post by opt2not »

I'm running my UVC in my New Astro City cab, trying to run Ultra SF4 off my Xbox 360. I have my UVC set to 24khz, wired up through the Jamma connector of my cab, but I'm getting faint wavy lines in picture, it looks like noise in the sync but I'm not quite sure what it is:

Image

The noise seems to scroll down the screen, and seems to be most noticeable during the brighter images.

Image

Could it be a problem with UVC itself? or perhaps how I'm grounding it?

My UVC is connected to a Jamma connector and is powered by my cabinet's PSU.
Sync is connected to pin P, and the video ground is connected to pin 14. Should I switch up the video ground to one of the other grounds?

Any help would be much appreciated!

No shit, I was just about to post exactly the same problem, im running it in an Aero from the cabs PSU. I can kind of get the problem to come and go by wiggling the Molex connector. Its very slight but really annoying

This may be unrelated, but I think the monitors in some of these cabs are very picky about their power supplies.
I have a Cyberlead and if I try to power the PCB with the monitor on the same power supply, I get bad interference
in the picture, which is especially noticeable on dark scenes. If the PCB is powered on a separate power supply, the
picture on the CRT is clean, so that's what I'm doing right now.

I dug out an old arcade PSU I pulled from a cab a while ago, and connected to the UVC.

It definitely changed, though not perfect, it's easier to look at now:

Hard to tell by the blurry picture, but there is still a bit of that wavy line issue, but it's minimal now.
I think I'm going to put some new caps in the PSU and see if I can get it perfect. Thanks for the tip rugdoctor, it looks like this is the right avenue to go down.

Awesome news! I used a ext. ide power adapter myself:

Not the most practical way to power up the UVC but certainly free from power waves.

And the result was pretty narly on the old monitor in the PONY II:

I forgotten to shift the image up 1 pixel prior to taking the photos which I think will "lock" it in place.

Excellent looking output, rugdoctor. Nice job.

Could you explain to me what this sentence refers to? Do I need to be doing the same?

http://scanlines.hazard-city.de/

read the paragraph about tweaking the Emotia's and UVC's input by shifting the input by one line.

Or to quote myself:
...both the UVC and the Emotia average two input lines into a single output line, but unfortunately they start with line 2 and merge it with line 3. If you imagine a classic low-res titles running line-doubled on a 360 (imagine Mushihimesama Futari or ESPGaluda II), lines 1 and 2 are identical and so are 3 and 4 (and so on). Merging lines 2 and 3 on the other hand, causes a certain bluriness and lack of sharpness. Many titles (like Futari) can be adjusted with in-game options: by moving the screen one line up or down, you'll notice a visible increase in sharpness. If your source can't be adjusted, you can use one of the Extron interfaces (with vertical shift) to do this externally. Just put the RGB interface between your source and the UVC/Emotia and shift the signal using the centering controls. This will oh-so magically increase the sharpness of your output a lot !

I have experienced wavy lines because of ground-loops.

There are two kinds of ground in your arcade cabinet GROUND and 0V.

Your typical PSU will have 0V (COM / GND) and FG (FRAME Ground)

The 0V should be wired on both sides of the JAMMA loom i.e. 1,2,A,B,27,28, e & f should all be 0V.

Some PCBs don't have a proper video ground so this should also be 0V.

To avoid ground-loops I connect FG and 0V together on the PSU.

Old bump but finally got this sorted , the 5v on my arcade PSU needed adjusting ,it's was slightly to high.

I read in another thread that the UVC is very picky with 5v

Lol after all this time...
