Favorite cracking group?

Post by it290 »

Not so much talking about modern day -- not much real cracking happens anymore -- but more towards the oldschool.

As for myself, I'd have to go w/Fairlight -- probably not the most prolific group of all time, but their 20-odd years of consistent quality across multiple platforms makes up for it, not to mention their many classic (and often useful) cracktros, several excellent demo units, and their well organized structure. They also have the best slogans. ;)

I just noticed your sig, "state of the art"! ;)

Can't say I know enough about the cracking scene to list any favourite groups. I've watched a good deal of demos though, and I'm fairly active in the chip / scene music division.

'Vibrants' would be my all-time favourite scene group though. Awesome adlib music group.

I only really remember Black Monks and Skid Row.

What the heck is Cracking?
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I opened this thread up thinking it had something to do with making fun of people, you know "cracking" on people.

What the heck is Cracking?
Cracking - removing the copyright protection on software, mainly on games. Back in the day, games on floppy had elaborate protection schemes, often including bizzarely written discs that were impossible to duplicate on normal floppy drives and the infamous 'manual lookup' protection. Groups got a lot of prestige (heh heh) from doing '0day' releases, meaning the cracks were available on or before the official release date (this is still the case, although it's much easier with the internet -- back then there were couriers that would call numerous Bulletin Board Systems and upload the files). Generally they also added 'cracktros', ie intros that would play before the game loaded, featuring chip music, scrolltexts, and demo-like effects (plasma, rasterbars, fractal zoomers etc). This scene is still pretty active, but nowadays a lot of 'cracking' involves using CD cloning software and distributing legit CD-keys, ie stuff that's pretty damn easy to do. Cracktros are rarely seen any more, either. Hence the cracking 'scene' is kind of lame nowadays.

BTW - most of that 'leet speak' you see on the internet started out as a parody of the cracking scene. 'Warez kiddies' and couriers were considered the lamest part of the underground computing scene, and those who considered themselves on the highest rungs -- the hack/phreak crowd mainly -- poked a lot of fun at the crackers and especially those who didn't crack but merely couriered or downloaded games.

Man, I miss the cracking days. I used to run a BBS on the old C64 with not 1 , but 2 1541 drives! It was called the Zero Hour BBS and, of course, I specialized in 0 day warez. Not 1, 0. I ran my board on 6485 and then a 6486 with its enhanced message board features and credit system.

Anyway, I have fond memories of all the groups, ESI, UCF, FBR, etc... It was an awesome time. I think UCF was my favorite for awhile and then ESI started to have fantastic art and intro screens and that put them over the top for me.

Hey zinger, I'd love to hear some of your chips! I write music on the Game Boy and NES, and I'll be playing a show in Stockholm on May 29th (part of this tour - http://resist.8bitpeoples.com ).

To answer the original questions posed in the thread, I'd have to say some of my favorite crews are the previously mentioned Fairlight and Vibrants, as well as (mostly music-focused) Rebels, Beepdealers, Megahawks, YM Rockerz.

Back in the day, I did a few cracktros and demos for a fairly unknown group called Fantasy Cracking Service. Among the famous guys, I preferred the Dynamic Duo, because their cracktros were very short, so they didn´t blow up filesize too much. I used to repack several games if cracktros and multiple compression algorithms caused the wait time or file size to blow up too much. To me, even disc space was valuable.

Nah man, you're way off. ;) I like Ken Ishii too, but the sig is from one of the best demos of all time -- State Of The Art by Spaceballs. Check it out sometime.

Fairlight, Quartex, Skid Row are the ones I remember the most. Indeed Fairlight did the best intros... I remember one with a little lemming walking on a logo, and a purple background...

I should really find some space to plug my A500 and have a look at my bootlegs again.

I miss Razor 1911 - they were always good rippers and crackers.

I also miss the demo group Future Crew and the 1 man demo group Tron (or was it Tran?)

Gameboy-music is where it's at. I fiddle around in Nanoloop on occasions, just now working on a webpage for the whole thing.

But anyhow, here in Sweden the demo-scene is and always has been one of the worlds greatest. I remember Assembly 95 (although in Helsinki) that was one of the best parties I ever went to.
