When I first joined ths forum, I had never played any other shmup than the one I made a topic about and needed help to identify. After that, I didn't try to play another one, or actually put some effort into getting one, mostly because I was already indulged tin DMC1 and DMC3. But today, while I was at this place called Coolectors Mall which is basically like a comic book shop but it has tournaments for things such as Yugioh and Magic. I noticed an arcade machine(they are starting to have a little place with arcades) that said Neo Geo and had five games, three I didn't care about but two got my attention, Metal Slug 4 and Zed Blade. I only played Metal Slug 4 twice, but I played Zed Balde about five times. Both games were amazing, I don't care if they are considered knock offs, they were fun. I never continued when the option came up because I wanted to try and make it so I can 1cc games. I tried to listen to the stage music but there was too much noise, all I heard was voice samples that sounded like they were from the Ridge Racer tracks that Shini Hoses composed, that might have been from the DDR machine though. This does not mean I will try to focus all of my spending on shmups but it does mean I will be visiting that place more often and will bring a lot of quarters and one dollar bills. Zed Blade and Metal Slug 4 got me so excited that I forgot it was friday and still in the Lenten season and I went to Burger King, I remembered that it was Lent right before the last bite. I think arcades make me have short term memory for a short amount of time.

That's funny... yesterday for lunch, a few coworkers and I went to this pizza joint named Topper's. First of all, walking in there, I felt like I was 7 or 8 again, going to Chuck E. Cheese's with my folks. The pizza smell just took me back many, many years. After ordering, I looked over at the videogames, and saw that they had Strikers 1945 Plus on their Neo-Geo system. As a rule, I have to play a shmup if I see one (I was thrilled to find a Raiden II machine near my friend's house at Red Robin), so I played a couple games and had a blast. Playing arcade games is nostalgic to begin with, but when it's a shmup, it makes it that much more special, even if the game isn't that good, or the controls are suspect/broken.

Speaking of nostalgia, there's an arcade across town from me that I visit when I'm in the neighborhood. Most of the games are terrible, but it's got a Centipede machine and Galaga machine with good working controls that only cost a quarter to play. I don't play seriously but it's fun to play Centipede with the actual track ball.

Unfortunately, the place is really ghetto and they've got a bouncer and shit because so many fights start. They won't even let you wear a baseball cap in the door because they don't want you trying to show your gang affiliation.

Plus, the knock-off DDR machine is always turned up really loud.

I found a Chuy's that had Progear in it. I was amazed; it was the first Cave game I've ever seen in an arcade, here in the States. It was the one in Mesa, I believe.

I'm thinking about asking the manager if I can buy it off of him. I'm actually kind of stressed about it, since I learned about the suicide chip.

You know, I seem to remember that the cabinet looked like a Neo Geo one, but that could be a confabulation.

Heh, sounds like the old Pakkman arcade out in Pasadena, CA. Scary as hell, and the guy that worked there never said a word to me, and wore a camo hat with rearview mirrors on it... guessing he was a war vet. I went only twice, and both times, I had to keep an eye on my friend and his GF to make sure they were OK.

howmuchkeefe: That's awesome about the Progear machine! I can't get over how sweet the artwork is in that game. And at Chuy's, no less. The Chuy's around here are devoid of anything videogame-related.

Pizza joints always have the coolest shmups. The Pizza Inn in my hometown used to have 1944 - The Loop Master machine in it. The cool part? It was a sit down, mushroom style cabinet like the old Mario/Castlevania ones from the eighties. The owner's had installed The Loop Master in it! I blew tons of cash in that sucka'.

Aside from that the Dairy Queen up the street had Ghost Pilots. Weeee!

The last place I went to most recently was Fun World which is a semi-golf course/Laser-Tag arcade/ferris wheel place in Waukesha.

I actually got to play Asteroids...the old one with the luminescent monitor Oscilloscope Light thing...I forget what it's called...the Original one. A real classic if there ever was one.

No color or music at all, just white lines and explosions and rocket noise.

The only arcade I've seen in the last 10 years (seriously) is a craptastic one at Union Station in Chicago, on my way to school. They have a galaga machine which used to be only a quarter, but now they jacked it up to 50 cents, so I don't even bother. Used to be a good distraction waiting for the train to arrive, though

Here in Brooklyn there is a bar called Barcade. The selection isn't awesome, but it has a lot of classics like Donkey Kong, Rampage, Star Wars, Galaga, and Ms. Pac-Man. They have their bases more or less covered, but the shmups are definitely not represented very well (I think they have one, but I don't recall what it is). And they have an excellent selection of foreign beers on tap as well. It's actually a really nice bar/arcade, and in Williamsburg too.

i've been meaning to check that place out actually. a couple friends go there from time to time, good to have some active arcade like places no matter what the content.

I know that Galaga machine. Yeah, the controls are in good working order because hardly anyone plays it though.

I'm located in the city as well. Where in Chicago do you live?

I know that the Phoenix Filiberto's on 19th Ave and Thunderbird still has a Three Wonders machine in there. The screen is in craptacular condition though...

EDIT - Not a shmup but worthy of mention since it is rare - The Golf Land in south Phoenix has Golden Axe - The Revenge of Death Adder in it. It's the only place i've ever encountered this machine.

Great to see a budding Neo Geo fan around. In the Slug series I'd recommend (mainly) 1, X, and 3. All are great though. Zed Blade's a pretty good horizontal shooter, but for me it's about Blazing Star. By the way, that machine you played on was a 6 slot. Could hold another game if someone wanted to add one.
