Oblivion
Heh, funny thing is, I get about the same framerates in Oblivion and Morrowind on my PC. Just goes to show you how crappy that Morrowind engine was, although Oblivion's isn't super-great.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
Whaaaa! My character's been turned into a vampire! Is the cure easy enough to get?

Did you just contract the polysomething hemophilia, or are you a full on vampire? If it's the former, you can just go to the temple and pray. Not sure about the latter.Whaaaa! My character's been turned into a vampire! Is the cure easy enough to get?

Nah it's a full vampire thing. Some neck sucker came for me while my character was catching 40 wings in bed.

Its actually a fairly long quest to get the cure. Go talk to the Count of Skingrad about it, he'll be able to get you on your way.
Of course, being a vampire has its benefits...

I finished Oblivion 3 days ago btw. Main quest has way too much filler and is much too short, but the ending kicked ass. I also climbed to the top of the Dark Brotherhood, Arena, and Thieves Guild. I'm pretty much done with Oblivion for awhile now.

Anyone offended by this?
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6147013.html
The article sums it up nicely, but personally, I think it's hilarious for a company to expect us to pay money for dumb shit like this - $2+ for a damned horse dressup piece? AFTER you've shelled out 50-60 bucks for the damned game? Whatever happened to free patches? And what are they going to do if - heavens forbid - someone mods the game and creates the same thing? Tell them to stop?
Obviously, no one is forcing me to buy the thing; however, just the fact that the company thinks people are so damned stupid that they will literally pay for nothing feels like an insult to me. I kinda understand that in MMOs (which I don't play - the concept of paying retail AND paying monthly is just wrong) people might want to differentiate themselves; however, in this game, it's single player! Who you gonna impress?
The worst idea since in game advertising, IMO

I'm with you, brother. Whoever thought April fool's day was a fun idea needs to have his balls punched. However, I don't think this idea in particular was an April fool's joke.landshark wrote:So don't buy it. They didn't hold your live! account hostage or anything.
If people want to pay for it, let them. It's legitimate business.
Of course, this could be another April 1st thing. God I hate that day.
As I stated, obviously no one is forcing me to buy it; however, I think it does no good to anyone, both buyer and seller, by not communicating the reason for not liking it. If you don't speak up, they have no idea why people might not be buying things, thus leaving them in the dark. The result of this is that it gives sellers more stupid shit to try to stuff in our faces. (Of course, this assumes they even read about oblivion in a forum for shmups...questionable logic, but work with me, please?

To clarify, I'm saying that this download is a bad idea because they are selling something trivial for a relatively high cost VERY soon after people shelled out 50-60 dollars. If it was a new quest, or anything else of substance, it's a completely different matter; however, some new horse clothes just doesn't jive with me, especially at $2+. Further, there's also the question of who'd want this for a single player game, since there's no way to "show off" your new horse duds to anyone else, except maybe yo mama

Ok, the gore thing - that's fine, no complaint there - it is a fairly graphic game in places, severed heads and so on in some rooms.Thunder Force wrote:ESRB agrees with you: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6148897.htmljp wrote:Also, this game SHOULD NOT be rated T. However, the whole 'nude characters' thing is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. Someone modified the game. Someone might mod the next disney game to give Mickey a giant penis, is that now 'M' for mature?
Bloody idiots.

It is a quite old topic but rather appropriate.
I started playing this game just 2 days ago. Morrowind sucked ass, the same as all non-japanese-aka-final fantasy pc games, but Oblivion rocks! It's a perfect balance between first person action and adventure game(imo) and it just can't let me go away from the console
Everythind seems to been told about this one so one thing I must say: if you haven't tried it and stopping shooting/killing/mashing doesn't scare you, you got my recommendation

Re: Oblivion
Oh yeah, this thread needs to live again.
I bought Oblivion GOTY (PS3) last year and have been playing it off and on since. I have no clue how many hours I've logged into this puppy, but it's really absurd. Looking back at these ancient posts, I don't get how JP beat most of the guild quests and games in what looks like a couple weeks or a month. Maybe it's because I'm taking the approach of slow leveling /Efficient leveling, or maybe it's because I just spend so much time dorking around in the game, poking through everything. I've not even started the thief or dark brotherhood guild quests, but have been messing around creating spells and enchanted weapons--and snooping around a bit in the shivering isles expansion.
Jesus this is a huge fucking game.
Any word on TES 5? I think by the time the next generation of consoles rolls around I might be done with this game.

Re: Oblivion
I bought the GotY edition for PC but I still have not played this yet. I kept hearing how Fallout 3 was nothing but Oblivion with guns though and I finished that and all DLC in about 170 hours. I really need to play Oblivion but hell the new FO comes out in like two months. I have not heard shit about a new Elder Scrolls, I do not think anything has been announced.
Re: Oblivion
There are some murmurings about TES5, but not enough so that anything can be verified. It's in the same territory as Demon's Souls 2 at the moment. Likely, but nothing substantial.
I am enjoying Oblivion much more than Fallout 3, but I have friends who lean towards the latter. Oblivion is definitely much more a labor of love project. There's much more story and background, different races and a whole fantasy world to explore. The game engine of Fallout 3 is basically a streamlined and much more intuitive version of Oblivion's game engine. This can be a good or bad thing depending on you. Oblivion also has scaling difficulty, where the whole world levels with you--and while you will want to level, it is interesting to see a game that basically could be beaten at level 1. It also has over twice as many quests (probably 3x as many with the shivering isles add on), deeper story-lines (IMO) and in general a warmer, more interesting world with lots of personality.
Personally I just really like how open they've left the game engine. This can be seen as a pro or a con, but once I learned how to manipulate it (leveling system, spell creation system, weapon enchantment system) I felt like it offered a lot more freedom than most other games, including FallOut 3. Of course it is possible to explore a great deal of the game and even beat it without exploring a lot of what you can do. I am sure there's still a lot I haven't figured out yet.

Re: Oblivion
I bought the GotY edition a few days ago too, it was only $8 USD, so how could I say no to that? Anyway I haven't been playing it because, for some reason, whenever enemies appear the game slows down to a total crawl and it becomes unplayable. I even updated to my latest card's drivers and it's still doing it. It's pretty disappointing that I can't even run Oblivion on max settings, considering my PC didn't even exist back when this was released.
Re: Oblivion
The game's code wasn't as optimized as it could have been from what I understand. Users have done their best to make mods to try and help give people better performance without sacrificing the visuals. However, you can also go here...
http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html
Rather nice guide with some genuinely useful tweaks.
Oh, and be sure to check out some of the mods. From MUCH better looking female models, to difficulty adjustments, to new items, there's all sorts of stuff.

Re: Oblivion
Jesus that's a lot of stuff. I didn't see anything that could help my situation though, it still stutters every couple of seconds. Borderlands and Mirror's Edge ran perfectly fine.
I even set my settings to "medium" and it's still giving me problems. Honestly, this is exactly why I can't stand to keep up with PC gaming. I have a quad core, 4 GB of RAM and a 4850, so it shouldn't be giving me any issues.
I might just leave it installed. I can't be bothered tweaking it at all.

Re: Oblivion
I really should've picked this up during the Steam sale, but I have a backlog of Steam games that a) still need installing/playing and b) require a better computer anyway.
Re: Oblivion
Runs perfectly fine on my PS3.
Oh, just in case someone was really curious/pervy; here's a video of the skin mod that let's you have a female topless character.
NSFW obviously, though really not that bad...

I'm always amazed how people get so uptight about this sort of thing.
EDIT: added NSFW message.

That's weird. Sounds like a driver issue to me but I don't have an ATI so I can't help ya there. Unless your on Vista, I had some problems kinda liked that caused by UAC for some reason.Elixir wrote:I even set my settings to "medium" and it's still giving me problems. And good lord Oblivion how I miss thee. I beat every quest I could find at least three of four times over the past few years on both 360 and PC. Great game with a brilliant mod base. Can't wait to see what Elder Scrolls V ends up looking like.
Re: Oblivion
I just made a kick ass sword today:
Soul suck...er I mean soul capture
All three elemental damage types
Weakness to all three elemental damage at 100% types for 2 sec
Weakness to magic (which stacks) for 2 seconds.
Definitely a rush down weapon because of the 2 second limitation (second hit has got to get in for crazy damage stacking). Down the road when/if I make something more powerful, it might be good to up the amount of time the weakness lasts for, but right now it seems pretty darn powerful.
