Biggest bosses in shmups ever

Post by Macaw »

This is a topic I just couldnt resist making. I cant think of very many at the moment... only the multiscreen snes Area 88 bosses and Queen/Fire Fossil from G. Darius come to mind... oh and that enormous ship at the end of Soukyugurentai. Anyone here know of other rediculously huge bosses? (i'm guessing hori's are gonna get the most attention here seeing as they seem much more focused on absurd 50 million screen bosses and such)

I bet vertical shooters have the biggest bosses though, because you can fly over them and they can span in almost every direction.
By the way, the giant bass on the swamp stage of Apidya could be a runner-up :D because Apidya is based on insects, they tried to do some pretty large things and the bass is freakin' HUGE - considering the limited power of an Amiga.

The satellite base on the fourth stage of Ikaruga is pretty huge as well - you can consider it a boss if you think about it, and actually the stage itself is nothing more than a giant boss.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

I haven't seen it myself, but IIRC there's a boss in one of the Darius games (I forget which) called "Titanic Lance," a really big squidlike thing, several screens long, which you hear mentioned around here from time to time...anyone got a link to the "Huge Darius Bosses" site?

Bosses in Chaos Field (Arcade/DC versions) are so large they don't even allow for other enemies on screen throughout the game! ;)

The level 3 (iirc) ship in R-type was pretty huge too. :)

The boss of the "star wars" level (forget the name :P I think it was level 4 ?) is another huge destroyer or something, it's pretty huge.

Mushihime has large bosses throughout most of the game. The giant beetle in stage 1 is enormous for a first boss. I especially like the stage 3 "carrier" insect which reminds me of gradually picking away at the big Bydo battleship in level 3 of R-TYPE. Progear has some large bosses as well like the Nessy sub in stage 2 for one example. How about the giant rotating circular/cylinder turret/360 boss in Radiant? (forget which stage it is)

R-Type's bydo battleship (stage 3 me thinks) proberbly is the biggest I think. After all it was the whole damn stage! This monster also returns in R-Type final and maintains the same epic scale as the orignal but with more fitting music! :D

Gradius/Nemesis 2 on MSX.

There are some bosses that are like 2 or 3 screens big, if my memory serves well.

How about the robot from Last Resort, where all you can attack at first is it's knee. Or the Ostri- Os... that boss whose name is close to the word "ostridge" from Blast Wind. Sure, they're not the largest ones out there, but they were big.

Oh yes - to think about that, even Parodius Da! Has the huge sleeping blonde girl - she's like 2 screens long :P

Lono, from Super Aleste or Space Megaforce's 2nd stage. It's a 1024x896 behemoth with five main platforms.

All of Stage 5 of Gradius Gaiden could construe as one huge boss, as the boss part of it is is merely the front of the entire thing.

The final boss in Thunder Force II is a top-view stage battle against a gigantic battleship that's about a thousand times the size of your starfighter...

Actually (in the Saturn version, at least), there are 2 giant bunnygirls, one of 'em is kneeling though (but she can still slap you around if you shoot her from too close!)

Btw, your spelling was actually pretty close. ;)

The armored train and that huge armored carrier platform in Raiden Fighters 2.

That big plane in Raiden Fighters Jet where you have to blow it up section by section before fighting its core(Stage 35 IIRC).

And as mentioned by Dylan1CC, stage three in Mushihimesama is just fantastic. :)
