Removing coating from front of tube of NEC XP-3790 monitor

Post by xga »

I have a light and long surface scratch in the centre of the screen on my NEC XP-3790 which is annoying and distracting when playing games. According to the service manual, the XM37's and XP37's have an "anti-static electricity coating" and an "optical filter coating". I'm certain the scratch is only on the coating(s) and hasn't gone deep enough to scratch the actual glass tube. Has anyone tried removing the coating on a XM37 or XP37 (or even a XM29, I imagine they are all using Toshiba tubes and similar in spec)? I'm wondering if it's going to be like removing the anti-glare film like in this video from phonedork (jump to 2:43 to see the removal).

A lot of crt monitors have some kind of anti coating on it and usually it is not recommended you remove it. That said, if you got a light controlled room then go for it. The procedure is moslty the same all accross monitors. Though I imagine the AG coating on a beast of a monitor would be a lot more difficult that a smaller one. If you go on with the removal you should document it on here.

I've had a blemish on my BVM and haven't gone ahead to figure out if it has the film on the glass. I'm fairly certain it does not, only because the tube just feels like glass.. plus I'm afraid that the blemish isn't exactly a surface scratch / scuff like all of the examples that are out there, but moreso like a tiny chip. Pretty sure if this thing had a film layer on it, it would be thin as hell and not thick enough to give a chip result like i'm witnessing.

Its one of those things where once I noticed it, I cannot unsee it, you know? Good luck

I don't advise you remove it if you can move it or change lighting so you won't notice it while it's running.

If it's annoying and distracting I would remove it.

Can't help you there, but I want to send you positive energy and wish you luck. Please make sure to document your attemp with a couple of pics if you do decide to peel off the coating!

Also, welcome aboard the 37 inch NEC display monitor club
