PS3 Fat has sharper image quality over Slim?
Re: PS3 Fat has sharper image quality over Slim?
Since this thread I got a Slim and can confirm that over HDMI, both the launch PS3 and the Slim PS3 have the same picture quality.
The difference is that the Slim support 2 additional Dolby Digital and 2 additional DTS settings.
I also noticed a difference in game performance in certain games, the original PS3 has some issues running certain games, Armored Core For Answer in particular has a pathetic performance issues when played on the original PS3, see this video:

On a CECHA this level is basically unplayable, the FPS drops to 1 frame per 4 seconds.

Don't forget that the slim PS3s also have HDMI-CEC functionality, whereas the older ones don't. :/Lawfer wrote:Since this thread I got a Slim and can confirm that over HDMI, both the launch PS3 and the Slim PS3 have the same picture quality.

Thanks for the testing and posting results, Lawfer.
Awesome. Makes me feel better about investing in two PS3 Slims.nmalinoski wrote:Don't forget that the slim PS3s also have HDMI-CEC functionality, whereas the older ones don't. :/

Oh right I don't use it so I forgot about that, it's called "HDMI System Link" or something in the options.nmalinoski wrote:Don't forget that the slim PS3s also have HDMI-CEC functionality, whereas the older ones don't. :/Lawfer wrote:Since this thread I got a Slim and can confirm that over HDMI, both the launch PS3 and the Slim PS3 have the same picture quality.

Isn't just so that your console turn off at the same time as you turn off your TV?GeneraLight wrote:Awesome. Makes me feel better about investing in two PS3 Slims.

Seems like it. It's always nice to have extra optional features.Lawfer wrote:Isn't just so that your console turn off at the same time as you turn off your TV?

Yeah, I'm still waiting for my launch ps3 to support bitstreaming of HD codecsLawfer wrote:Since this thread I got a Slim and can confirm that over HDMI, both the launch PS3 and the Slim PS3 have the same picture quality.

Was there not some sort of law suit over that?

IIRC you can control the PS3's XMB via the TV remote arrow buttons if the TV supports the correct CEC sub-protocols.Lawfer wrote:Isn't just so that your console turn off at the same time as you turn off your TV?

Re: PS3 Fat has sharper image quality over Slim?
But don't forgot that there is still a performance difference between them, for Armored Core For Answer for example the game actually becomes playable on the Slim, but I also notice on the Slim that the animation flow in Drakengard 3 (Unreal Engine for a PS3 exclusive?) is more jerky then it is on my launch PS3, it's like the Slim uses "frame skipping" which I am guessing is in order to keep the game running at a more steady performance, while on the launch PS3 there isn't that (at least not that I noticed), but you will notice more FPS drops and hang ups (when a game just suddenly stops for a second or more).GeneraLight wrote:Thanks for the testing and posting results, Lawfer.
The other difference is in the heat, the original PS3 is literally like a small electric radiator, while the Slim is alot more standard in that area.
The lawsuit was for Other OS (Linux) which was removed in one of the firmware updates, wasn't it?Star1 wrote:Yeah, I'm still waiting for my launch ps3 to support bitstreaming of HD codecs![]()

Re: PS3 Fat has sharper image quality over Slim?
There was definitely one over OTherOS, but I have a vague memory of Sony getting in trouble over HD codecs. Both the box and stickers on the console itself proclaimed it had support for them, and Sony promised bitstreaming in a coming FW.
Re: PS3 Fat has sharper image quality over Slim?
I didn't know, but it's obvious that this option on the fat PS3 is not coming, the fat PS3s haven't been in production for a long time now (8 or 9 years?) and I am pretty sure Sony even stopped manufacturing PS3 for the US market way back in 2016 (or even 2015 maybe even) as you couldn't even find them for sale at retailers even back then anymore, while in Japan Sony manufactured PS3 all the way until 2017 as they were still readily available on amazon.co.jp (not marketplace sellers, amazon japan itself).Star1 wrote:There was definitely one over OTherOS, but I have a vague memory of Sony getting in trouble over HD codecs. Re: PS3 Fat has sharper image quality over Slim?
In theory the output should be identical, but not having your (then) costly receiver display "Dolby true HD" or "DTS HD-MA" was a big deal for audio geeks back then.

With my Sony TV it allows forUnseen wrote:IIRC you can control the PS3's XMB via the TV remote arrow buttons if the TV supports the correct CEC sub-protocols.Lawfer wrote:Isn't just so that your console turn off at the same time as you turn off your TV?
-turning the TV on with the correct input when the console is turned on (significant because this TV takes about 20 seconds after being on before you can change the input)
-controlling the XMB with the remote, including allowing you to use the home button while using a Dualshock 4, which in a backwards-ass Sony move to I guess sell more worthless DS3's, you can't normally do.
