Lupin the 3rd Return the Treasure
Hits all the right notes for a Lupin flick. Good action, all the gang heavily involved in this one.

Yeah this looks super interesting. Which I don't say too often these days.Xyga wrote:At least we're guaranteed a good story and setup.

Ha ha, yeah. Even the Super Sentai shows are using more CG in most robot fighting scenes.BrianC wrote:I miss the good old days when people could draw mechanical animals and cars that formed into giant robots.KAI wrote:FFS, they can't draws cars anymore, they can't draw animals anymore, I remember when people dreamed about being animators to draw giant robots and FXs.

I really dislike CGI. I'll forever be a goober about it.
LOTR orcs vs Hobbit orcs. No contest.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I'm guessing you didn't mean these LOTR orcs or these Hobbit orcs. Rotoscoping is neat, but the way Bakshi used it is a bit awkward and clashes with the rest of the animation. The Rankin Bass orcs are a bit too cartoony, but I prefer them over CG and the Bakshi versions. The CG Bear in that anime actually reminded me of the rotoscoping in Ralph Bakshi's LOTR.Steamflogger Boss wrote:I really dislike CGI. I'll forever be a goober about it.

I liked the deep canvas stuff used in Tarzan, but of course that was
The ultimate dream of computer art would be to use a sophisticated GAN that can render a zillion frames a second with as much detail as say a Berserk panel. My guess is google or whatever would be the developers and venders of such a thing. Not the animation studios.
If you think things are weird now, wonder what even narrower niches could be economically served with vastly lower costs. I might even get that remake of It with RPG game elements some day.

Two episodes in to Megalobox, and it's the best new anime I've seen in years. It genuinely looks like an early 90's OVA, right down to the grungy fuzzed out lo-rez visuals. Lots more world building in the second episode too. It feels like it was made for old bastards like me.
Also I got round to watching Ping Pong, which was just as beguiling as Devilman Crybaby, just exceptional throughout. The hyperreal grotesquery was facinating, easily as good as Ace Wo Nerae.
Any recommendations for hidden gold on Crunchyroll? Can't find an awful lot in amongst the moetrash but £5 a month is ludicrously cheap. Switching off my brain with Mob Psycho 100 and enduring Darling in the Franxx in the hopes it will go all End Of Evangelion l.

The first episode for the new season of Full Metal Panic is out. The last season was what, 2005?

Oh wow thanks for mentioning this. I don't track much new anime but I did love FMP. I have all the first three series on BD.soprano1 wrote:The first episode for the new season of Full Metal Panic is out. The last season was what, 2005?

Is this one more serious like the last series or mostly comedy like the second one?soprano1 wrote:The first episode for the new season of Full Metal Panic is out. The last season was what, 2005?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Prison School epilogue came out. A good middle finger to the fans - the t-shirt contest was as real as the stuff inside an Abrams Mystery Box. As expected.
The story surrounding this manga is more interesting than the comic itself.
Once upon a time, Akira Hiramoto made a manga by the name of "Me and the Devil Blues". It was about the fictionalized adventures of the musician Robert Johnson, after selling his soul to the devil to learn how to play the guitar well.
While respected, it did not become very popular with Japanese otaku who just want safe, sanitized escapism to get their minds off of their miserable lives.
Enraged, Hiramoto decided to set forth and create something that went below the lowest common denominator. A dumb sex comedy like Porky's or Animal House cranked up to a thousand: Prison School.
The massive success he found with this series did little to soothe his anger. Quite the contrary - it made him mad. The man has been missing since that time - though there are strange unsubstantiated rumors involving him and the disappearances of dozens of otaku in the vicinity of Akihabara.

Did the disappering otakus realized how terrible their tastes and lives were, therefore deciding to disappear from life or something?BryanM wrote:Prison School epilogue came out. If that's the case, I could thank Mr.Hiramoto for this.

Nope, no Pony in perspective.the series creator confirmed that Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory is a "continuation" that won't contain any "explanation or expository episodes." The pacing of the story is going to be "full throttle from the get-go" although it will still "follow the original work pretty closely"

Kekkou Kamen by Go Nagai. Amusing, I think. The question I have is, how the fuck did this run in Jump? I know it was the 70's, but...

Sherlock Hound is an interesting show. Watched the first three episodes (english version) with my mother last night and by the end of the 3rd she was quite enjoying it. It reminds one that most of the original Sherlock stories were kinda dumb. lol

Still watching Hana Yori Dango. I've still not watched less than 5 episodes consecutively once I've been able to have the time and sit down to watch. It's one of those shows that makes you want to just plow from episode to episode. I watched an entire disc (and I have the Discotek release so it's around 7 episodes per disc) last weekend.
After watching the oavs/specials I started on the City Hunter tv series. Pretty enjoyable, watched the first disc so just 5 episodes so far.
Still watching Ranma at random but unlike HYD I can just watch one or two episodes here or there and not care.

I hate most of Mari Okada's stuff, but Hisone to Masotan is good shit.
This, Darling in the ass and hinamatsuri are my pics this season (plus Gineiden DNT and FMPIV, but those are sequels or remakes of things I love)

I still enjoy Saiki K. It's nice that it's not a procedural, and that I don't like it to the degree where I want to consume the entire thing in one go. So it's possible to take it in a chapter or three a week, which keeps it from getting oversaturated.
It's just a rare balance that reminds me of how media was like back in the 80's and 90's.

Watched Mazinger Z Infinity. Plot was so-so, the VA changes were weird for some characters, and maybe unnecessary. Both the 2D animation and the 3D were pretty good, they flowed nicely together, and the battles were fantastic. Music was especially nice, using variations from the 1972 theme song.
Now where is the Shin Mazinger Zero anime adaptation? Or an OVA...

Indeed, looks like shit. Let's hope Hathaway's Flash retains at least the character designs by Mikimoto.
I wonder if Tomino is planning to direct his own novel adaptation, that would be sooooo fucking awesome.

Finished the 1982 Cobra TV series. Really lamenting the old days... there's just no grit in the medium any more. I'm sure a lot of people would find the show brazenly sexist and perhaps even offensive these days. Bubble Era Japan -- no place quite like it.
Not sure if I will watch the 2010 OVA series. Looks like it could be okay.

Yeah, it's the best. I've had a hard time caring about the later OVAs; they're just too 'shiny'. Doesn't feel right.
Favorite part has got to be when he's flying away from a villain, then turns back around and says something to the degree of "Oh yeah", then blows him away. What a dude.

I think my next move is to read the manga. Doesn't require too much time, and ultimately will have the things I love about it, I'm sure. In hind sight, I'm glad I missed this one when I first got into anime 25 years ago. Gives me something to enjoy now.
Why I hate almost everything new. I guess I can forgive a bit of the brighter stuff that's hand drawn a la the 90's. I also don't like the way the character designs in general have gone. So much angst... these poor cartoons need to get some ass! I get that some people think I'm an old bastard and bitching about nothing, but keep in mind I use film (sans photos on my phone) and buy records. Something about the human element always draws me in. Maybe when the robots have enslaved us these young punks will get what I mean.drauch wrote:Yeah, it's the best. Cobra rocks. 80s anime is the best, but a lot of stuff from the 90s ain't too shabby either.
