WTF @ 1941
I like this game, but there is some stuff bugging me about it. Namely the looping and the charge attack. Both seem utterly useless to me. When you loop, you lose one vitality point. Now if I were to use this in a situation that I knew I would take a hit, why wouldn't I just go ahead and eat the hit instead? Same outcome. And the dinky ass bomb that comes out after the loop is barely worth mentioning. Which brings me to my next point. The charge attack. I stop shooting to charge this up and it does crap damage. What in the hell? As hard as this game gets you'd think you'd hvae something powerful to use in sticky situations. But in this game I just really feel underpowered. It's challenging yes, but frustrating to have all these useless options. Maybe I just don't understand the game.

The Bomb loop is very situational - only for use if not doing so would lead to taking several hits, or if an extra P happens to be nearby when you're full.
The charge attack is very useful though. You don't have to charge up to full strength, a series of quick blasts is an extremely effective attack against hardened targets. You don't even have to stop shooting really... the plain shots will pretty much come out uninterrupted.
Fuller charges are useful for when the enemy isn't in line of your guns, or for "bombing runs" on big enemies that chuck a lot of lead and keep you moving.

I mainly use the bomb on much bigger targets/bosses.
btw, ya just gotta love the sci-fi meets "history" of these old shooters, "Tonight on the History channel: charge lazers, satellite 'bots and giant mechs, the top secret history of WWII!"
You can definitely see how Psikyo took a que from this game and said "Hmmm. Well hey, we'll make our own plane shooter and we'll 1-UP Capcom by throwing in some giant robots and aliens too!" lol
