Nintendo: Revolution will have Genesis\TurboGrafx games
Considering how stupidly easy it is to emulate all of this stuff already, I don't think that's a huge concern for them. They're banking on people who either don't know about emulation, are against illegal roms, or don't want to deal with the hassles of it. I mean, getting a PCE CD burned properly is still more difficult than downloading Sonic 2.

My prediction:No_not_like_Quake wrote:I hope they can output in low-res. I don't see why not, and am confident they're taking this into account. Atl least I hope so. Do it right or don't do it at all.
There is no way Nintendo Revolution will only output these games in low-res. It would mean incompatibility ("out of res/frequency range" type of errors) with a large number of modern displays, like LCDs. Even though the Revolution doesn't render in HD, it will still need to work out-of-the-box with everything, no exceptions...
That leaves us with the possibility of Nintendo including true low-res output as a toggle option for these old titles. With Nintendo's apparent "keep it simple" philosophy, this also seems unlikely.
So get ready for some upscaling and filtering.

Also found a Joystiq story that suggests Nintendo might present upscaling and filtering as a marketing selling-point...
Joystiq wrote:According to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo is currently working with a new technology that would bestow their classic games with an updated look in time for their next-gen debut. However, he did not divulge the nature of the enhancement, nor did he hint at whether the technology would be integrated into the Revolution's hardware or be a part of the downloaded game itself. Theorists speculate that it may entail reskinning some or all of the classic games in Nintendo's lineup, as was done for the compilation Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES (shown at bottom right). Then again, Nintendo may choose the simpler route of merely incorporating a filtering or anti-aliasing method to improve the quality of the existing graphics. Certain N64 and SNES titles could benefit greatly from a method such as this.

I swear the video game industry are sadists.
They have an amazing talent for not giving people what they want.

Nintendo is giving them what they want, because most people will like the filters. The "low res or bust" crowd is a very small percentage of people who have fond memories of NES and Genesis games, and they're more likely to just play the games on the original hardware to begin with. It sucks from a creative and artistic point of view, but from a business point of view filtering the graphics to cater to the majority of the public makes a hell of a lot more sense.
I don't think most people know what the hell is going on.
As far as I know magazines don't really cover the scanline/res issue. Has Edge magazine? It's how they were playing arcade games back in the day. People need to be educated. MAMEs got it right. If everything was made for the majority then it would be a dull old place. Violent 3D games and realistic sports and driving games.
You've got go make a fuss to make things happen. For what it's worth.

You say they're not giving people what they want, but they are giving people what they want. What they want might not be right, and it might not be accurate to the original designs of the games, but it's still what they want. It's the same with people who buy fullscreen DVDs of widescreen movies.
And once again, there's no reason to include scanlines in what you want. It's a feature of the monitor, not the rest of the hardware or software. Nintendo can only include low res, they have no control over whether you'll see scanlines beyond that.

Now we just have to find a list of what will be downloadable for any given area's Revolutions. For North America, the Thunder Force and Super Darius games had better be available...
(Of course, what am I thinking? Genesis? The system that took full advantage of the height of the shmup genre? How much choice is Nintendo going to have in picking and choosing genres?)

The NEC stuff surprises me quite a bit; the Genesis stuff, less so, since I'd been told that Nintendo purchased some of that console's library.
Does anyone have a link to this keynote speech? I had an Expo pass, which didn't allow me access to the keynote speeches. www.gametrailers.com has a link to a speech with Phil Harrison, from Sony, but I'd really like to watch the Nintendo one, as well.
