Doctor Who on the Sci-Fi channel
I was a bit suprised that they revived this old classic British show, let alone broadcast it here in the USA.
The pilot episode made me laugh.....attack of the Plastic People! I'm glad the show hasen't lost its sense of British humor. I plan on buying the first season DVD when it is releashed in June.
Anyone else seen the new show and what do you think of it?

Yep, been a huge Dr Who fan since the 70s. I found the season that's showing on US SCI-FI to be a bit hit and miss to be honest. However some outstanding episodes in this season are -
The Unquiet Dead
Dalek
The Empty Child
The Doctor Dances
Bad Wolf
The Parting of the Ways
All of them are quite excellent.
The plastic mannequins that come to live are called the Autons who were old villians from the John Pertwee era. Tom Baker is still my favourite Doctor though.
The new series starts here in the UK in a fortnight with the.....

Kind of like a very bad omen. It's a theme that runs throughout the season.FatCobra wrote:*crosses fingers that Sci-Fi won't shaft US viewers*
Tom Baker was my favorite Doctor as well.
I have noticed that the praise "Bad Wolf" has been popping up in each episode. A running gag or a bad omen?

Can anyone educate me on his real name, what season/year these episodes might have been and the possible availability of said episodes on DVD (any region)?
Thanks in advance,

A few of his stories were released in the UK on DVD and are widely available here. The videos might be a bit rarer.
Tom Baker's my favorite doctor also. I think he's probably the most popular Doctor.
I am looking forward to the new season, although it is a bit disappointing that they've changed the Doctor -- I was just starting to like Eccleston. Haven't seen the Xmas special yet, I can't seem to find it anywhere.
As for the new show itself, I think it lacks some of the wittiness and drama of the original series. It's nice that there's more action, but at the same time, I find the dialog lacking. Definitely targeted more towards the ADD generation.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
The thing I do like about the new series is that there is more drama and a good bit more depth to the characters, this is especially evident in episodes like "Dalek" and "The Unquiet Dead".
Dalek is just an incredibly dark story, where you get to see an ugly side to the Doctor and The Unquiet Dead shows us a dying, dispirited Charles Dickens questioning his life and work. This is just something you never really got in the old Doctor Who shows.

Oh I dunno, obviously the new Doctor has more of a grudge against the Daleks after the whole Time War thing, but the old ones always did too. Check out 'Rememberance of the Daleks' (w/Sylvester McCoy) if you don't believe me.

Glad you noticed. I found it while looking for a new avatar. I had to shrink it down from 100x100 pixels to 80x80 pixels, but the quality loss is not noticeable.FRO wrote:I thought it was pretty cool, & had quite a sense of humor. FatCobra - love the new avatar, btw.
I do think the new Doctor Who is pretty funny. The Doctor is quite the character.
