Gothic 2

Post by captain ahar »

wondering what other on the board have thought of this. basically, is it worth investing time into (which it seems to need... in droves). i played around with it a bit, but died 5 enemies into the game (fucking bandit).

it seems like it might be pretty cool (especially with the promise of dragons down the road), and i enjoyed the gothic 1 demo i downloaded some years ago...

i bought it a while ago, but was only able to install it yesterday.

also, out of curiosity. how much of a system would i need to run the thing full stop? i'm talking max texture, model, effects, realistic fog limits (200-260).

i'm using:
geforce 4 MX 440 64MB
P4 1.8 Ghz
512 MB ram

...and with textures down to about 1/4 of the meter (same for models), with effects all turned on, and fog set to 200, my fps hovers around 25-30 fps. :P

...geez, those germans sure know how to make nonsensically resource demanding games... *i kid, i kid* (der clou 2, neuro hunter, and gothic come to mind).
I have no sig whatsoever.

imo it´s the best RPG ever made. I played it last December, and let me put it this way: Morrowind gave me loads of what I had been missing in jp. RPGs, but Gothic 2 gave me loads of what I had been missing in Morrowind, too.

In terms of system requirements, there´s one thing this game needs plenty of, and that´s Ram. Not only on the graphics card (128mb should be sufficient, though, because the game is 5 years old and no one even thought about cards with more back then), but also on the mainboard. I used to have my swapfile deactivated, but that caused Gothic 2 to crash within 15 minutes. The landscape is extremely detailed and big, but only has very few designated loading times, so everything else has to be done by the swapfile, and that´s not exactly optimated behaviour. Next time I´ll play Gothic 2, I´ll try it with 1024mb Ram, but maybe I´ll give it another go once I have twice as much.

i know you were running on a better system than me, but did you see any framerate drops when the enemies got bigger and more complex. but i don't want to have to set my graphics options any lower, at minimized settings the thing looks like animated mud... with eyes.

also, pirahna bites has/had some talented 2d artists on staff.

I love Gothic 2 but it can be tough, especially with the Night of the Raven expansion installed. It's an awesome game though and it's definitely worth sinking time into.

Good lord your video card is ancient. Pretty sure I ran the game at max with a barton 2.4/ 1 gig ram/ 9700 Pro. I can double check later today. With a ton of people upgrading their video cards for Oblivion you can probably pick up a good deal on a used video card with a bit of searching.

question was "night of the raven" sold seperately in the US?

does "die nacht des raben" (german equivalent) have a configurable language option?

what kind of material is added for the expansion?

and just saw the screens for gothic 3. sys requirements are going to be large as hell.

I've played the game briefly, but I found the controls to be too awkward to play it for long. I was also turned off by the way your character is predefined (yes, I know you can specialize in different things, I just mean the predefined model). I should give it another go, but it's sorta low on my RPG list right now (after Oblivion and Hammer & Sickle).

regarding awkward control: try switching to Gothic 2 controls - the default is Gothic 1 controls, and I couldn´t figure those out either. But with Gothic 2 controls, it doesn´t play that different from Morrowind (3rd person view can be toggled on/off, but on is easier because you need to estimate distances for blocking).

I don´t think so, haven´t played it yet, but the main game doesn´t have the option, so I´d be surprised to hear it was added. Probably the same reason as with Oblivion: too many soundfiles taking up too much space.

I played on an even slower system than yours: 1,2ghz PIII, 512mb SD-Ram, Geforce 2 Ti 64mb. But I´ve upgraded my graphics card already and am going to the same thing with my mobo, so I´m looking forward to having another go at (hopefully) max detail settings.

Or plug in an xbox360 controller and use joy2key. I've remapped almost everything to buttons on the controller and now I just sit back in my chair. (except when i need to use spells)
