New DS Castlevania on the way?

Post by Vexorg »

http://www.dsfanboy.com/2006/03/27/new- ... aled-soon/

A blurb on the back page of the current issue of Nintendo Power seems to suggest that next month's issue will reveal a new Castlevania game on the DS. Maybe they'll fill in the gaps on Julius Belmont's story...

You know what would be better than that?

The new game having a castle that isn't boring as shit to explore.

Good call. Could use more out in the woods stuff. Remember when the ferryman was creepy? Not so creepy in Dracula's basement.

Yeah, some innovation could really help get more fans into the decadent series.

God, I'd love to kill monsters Dracula's Castle again. Hell - I think the idea has at least 10 more sequels worth of potential fun.

Whether this announcement is actually talking about Castlevania or not is in question though.

More, and varied, environments!
Many more secret, unnecessary map sections with suitable prizes hidden within!
More optional bosses!
More gothic music!
More, newer beasties! ...and give existing ones new tricks!

... and please, PLEASE apply these suggestions to 3D Castelvanias. We need a Castlevania: Prime. Check that, we WANT a Castlevania: Prime; you guys are the ones who NEED it. Come to think of it, we want it so much bigger and better that it's CASTLEVANIA. We want it to be so good, we'll say things like: "Met... roid? Is that some sort of witch hazel cream?"

Blasphemy!

This message brought to you by your friendly neighborhood "Just because it CAN be 3D doesn't mean it SHOULD be 3D...why back in my day..." game geezer.

No, I agree. Apply those to the 3D games (which would hugely benefit, especially since 3D can lend itself extremely well to exploration) and let the 2D games get back to being about action again. We've had SotN remade three times now, and CotM wasn't hugely different either. The series needs an overhaul before it gets completely stale, because an ever-present sense of deja vu is not something you want in a game primarilly about exploration and discovery.

Fine with me if they keep it along the same lines as the others. Just goddamn give me all-new well-drawn sprites. What about some new enemies that don't suck. That'd fucken revitalize the series.

I'd like for them to explain why Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, one of the most sought after games in the series, has yet to be ported to another system.

Enough with that damned castle, enough with Metroid-style gameplay. How about bringing back the straight action platformer gameplay from the pre-SOTN games?

Guess I'm in the minority when I say that I like the way Castlevania is now and I hope they continue doing them that way. They just need to make the enemies, and esp. the bosses, a lot tougher and I'm happy. If I want to play something different, well, then I can do that. It's not like Castlevania is the only possible action platformer out there, is it?

I want a high-res 2D version of NanoBreaker, the greatest 3D Castlevania game yet.

Ya know, I don't really mind sequels, but they really should wait at least two years in between releases. What really drives me nuts is how these companies totally neglect their other classic franchises. There should be a rule that for every Castlevania game that gets published, a new 2D Contra, Salamader, or (insert classic Konami franchise name here) gets a release. Oh, and compilations/remakes don't count.

thinking about a new manbow installment on ps2 is making me get all sweaty...

konami should release the rom as an unlockable in an upcoming game to test the waters. and then if the reception is good (or not), they should kick out a really slamming sequel, and blow everyone away. and then i will proclaim them kings among men, and so shall it be.

Really? I personally thought that was one of the worst games of all time. Feels nothing like real ping pong and is nowhere near Pong's simplicity.

Either that or put one of those two on the PS2, low res sprites with bells on.

An english Rondo on the PS2 in the wrong res would be cruel.

But going for something completely different would be awesome. I'm not interested in some game 'wandering about in 3D'.

Actually, I spent about 10 minutes trying it out on the SS Konami MSX collection but the controls didn't feel intuitive at all. I guess I'll try it again sometime to see if I feel the magic.

Looks like this has a name now:

It will be called Portrait of Ruin, and appears to have a tenative release date of mid November.

Hell, with a name like that the game's gimmick will probably involve drawing Picassos.
